Interesting for RR fans but very small. There is a lot of good info and artifacts related to the history of RR in the west and in AZ but it is very small and many of the artifacts were not labeled. It is free so if you have a little time, it is worth a stop. Don't miss the steam engine that is located on the station platform or the marker with the statue of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday.

I came here one weekday morning before the museum was open and there was no one around. Truth be told, I just wanted to see the statues of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday as I'm reading a book that includes the incident that occurred here. Awesome statue and background on what happened here.
Although I was here for literally 15 minutes, Tucson's finest saw fit to issue a parking ticket as I had not fed the meter in the deserted parking lot. $42 later, I decided to write this. If you visit, feed the meter, even if the place is not open and there are no other cars around.

Amazing to go the Amtrak station in Tucson and see a real steam engine. Museum is separate. Go when hours are listed. Volunteers let you aboard. Great for kids of all ages. Then walk somewhere for lunch. Our 4 yr old grandson, still talking about the place.

The museum is centered around the SP RR 2-6-0 'Mogul' locomotive on display. Make sure to visit when they have the cab opened up and the docent on duty. It's not often you get to sit in a steam locomotive with your hand on the throttle while leaning out the window and ringing the bell. Stop by the main building and view the 1 room museum exhibit they have which details the hundred+ year history of railroading in Tucson. There is no admission fee. The suggested donation box says $5.
I gave this place 4 stars because of location. It is in one of the original SP RR buildings adjacent to the original and still active Tucson RR Station. Like watching trains? We saw 4 while walking around the locomotive. 1 Amtrak and 4 long UP freight trains rolling down the main line. This is also a good place to park and use as the place to start your walking tour of downtown Tucson. You are a block away from Congress St.

Really fun trip for the kids. The museum volunteers were very friendly and informative. Museum is small but is packed with history. The Steam engine outside was a HUGE hit with the kiddos. They loved sounding the bell. Overall, this is a great activity with kids when you're downtown.

You need to find this little gem just outside of the downtown hub bub. We walked the entire downtown and were thrilled to find this museum. Kids and adults alike will love the restored 1900 train, and the docent in the museum is delightful. We were disappointed to find the History Museum closed for the weekend, but this stop was well worth it.

Went to this museum today because it was free. It has a lot of information about trains hat help to build Tucson. They have a display of train stuff from the ate 1800s to present. They have an old steam engine locomotive that was oil feed rather that coal feed. The engine was used in the movie Oklahoma in 1955. The engine is in really good shape and the person who showed the engine was very knowledgeable.I found it to be worth the time to visit.

The locomotive from the movie Oklahoma is outside the museum and great fun to check out.
The museum is donation based with a suggested $5 donation per person.
The museum is small , but extremely well done and informative.

Visit a historic and unique working train depot and museum. Still servicing Amtrak, here you'll find a small, but well-stocked museum with many pictures and artifacts, memorabilia and publications from the trains' glory days. From the museum, to the depot, to the restaurant, close near-by parking, facilities, to the locomotive #1673 parked outside (which appeared in the movie "Oklahoma." You'll also see a statue of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, nearby where they shot and killed some "cowboys" starting the "Vendetta Ride." There's something here for everyone. Directly across the street is the Hotel Congress where John Dillinger's gang were arrested. LOTS of history in one small area!

While it is called a Transportation Museum, it really is only the Southern Pacific Railroad and the history of travel in the Tucson area from the stagecoach to the demise of the train system. It is a small museum dedicated to train memorabilia. I found the display of dinnerware to be most interesting. A small train runs around the perimeter of the room above your head. That would appeal to children but the rest of the museum would not. However, the chance to climb into the locomotive outside would definitely be a treat. Two gentlemen gave us a most informative conversation about the complexity of that engine. Parking is a problem and if you were using the tram system, it goes right by the museum.
