If you want a great out and back hike to one of the higher points surrounding Tucson, Wasson Peak is a nice choice. It's close to the city and offers some serious elevation. Once at the top you have some nice 360 degree views of...More

I would recommend using the Sweetwater Trailhead as it reduces the driving time to the other trailheads by at least 45 minutes. Beware, this is a desert hike with no shade and should only be done in cooler season.

Great loop hike with big views along the way. I would recommend hiking counter-clockwise beginning on the old forest road. This way your assent is on the steep rocky trail and decent on a longer moderate switchbacks. Be aware there is zero shade along the...More

Normally, the park is open only sunrise to sunset. The moon hikes are the only exception. Once a month and during the winter months only, Saguaro National Park offers ranger led hikes to the summit of Wasson Peak to watch the sunset. This hike is...More

This is a great intermediate hike in the saguaro national park. I started at the Esperanza trailhead. The hike to the peak is 3.9 miles each way and took me 3 1/2 hours round trip. You get great views of the desert along the trail...More

We hike to Wasson Peak via the Sweetwater Trail. This was a great route and a wonderful hike. The first 2 miles are a "lush" cactus garden including a couple of interesting washes. The area and cactus variety is so nice, it almost looked planted....More

For us, quite a strenuous hike, but we made it. We set of early in the morning, 7:30, and reached the top about 10:00. It took us longer to get down, but we did stop and have some lunch on the way. We were very...More

It seems like only the locals go to Wasson Peak, maybe because it is not promoted enough. In any case, if you want a 360 degree view of Tucson, be sitting under the flight path of commercial planes approaching the Tucson airport (you can wave...More

Wasson Peak is off the beaten path so mostly locals do this hike; it's never crowded. There are a few ways to reach the summit including the Sweetwater trail from the east and the Hugh Norris and the Sendero Esperanza trails from the west. The...More

This peak is inside the Saguaro National Park, and gives breathtaking views out over the entire surrounding area. I was lucky to have a beautiful clear day and could see for miles and miles in all directions, Tuscon itself seemed to sprawl over a huge...More
