This is the greatest little place for people searching for culture, great food, and great shopping in San Antonio! They have amazing artisan shops, glass blowing demonstrations, OUTSTANDING CUISINE, etc, etc, etc. Start your day with some hot tea and a scone at Madhatters, then walk around and enjoy the little shops and art galleries while you work up an appetite. For lunch try some great mexican at Rosarios or really homestyle italian at La Focaccia. In the evening enjoy live music and a fresh beer at Blue Star brewery and art gallery. All in all, the perfect San Antonio day!

I'm not from Texas but work has led me here for a short while. After lots of looking around I decided to get a loft in the South Town area. I was uncertain because I have never done "urban living." But shockingly, so far I LOVE this area. You can't truly judge it until you've found all it nooks and crannies and hidden gems. Seriously, I ate three times at the Brew Star Brewery before I knew there were several other restaurants in the "alley way" around the corner. It took me three weeks to find Bar 1919 hidden below Joe's Blues. My dogs love to sit outside on the patios at any of those places or hang out with the crowd at La Tuna. We ordered beers at the Friendly Spot one night from the more than 76 they have on draft. And the people are awesome. Some a little quirky, tatted and pierced; others are fitness buffs riding their bicycles up and down the river or hitting up the outdoor gym equipment at St Benedicts Lofts; while many professionals mingle about discarding their suit and ties and sauntering over to one of the various watering holes for a beer. I love the area and it's vibe. It definitely needs a good grocery store, but other than that it's just great. All the restaurants are phenomenal and every time I try a new one they just seem to continue to get better. Additionally, I have walked at night both with friends and by myself with my dogs and never felt unsafe. If Portland Oregon made love to San Antonio it's love child would be South Town.

If you're looking for a truer taste of San Antonio than what is offered at the Riverwalk then head over to Southtown. It's not far (a little more than walking but close) from the downtown hotels and offers true SA flavors. Try Rosario's for local mexican cuisine, Mad Hatter's for a different take, Taco Haven or The Friendly Spot for a few brews and enjoy the south Texas weather. As a local, I ALWAYS suggest visitors to drop in. First Friday (first Friday of each month) is a great time to go down to St. Mary's and Alamo for local vendors. Don't miss it!

Just a short drive, or medium walk weather permitting, from the touristy downtown Riverwalk Loop of crowded eateries, is Southtown which is next to the king William district and next to the lower Riverwalk. It's full of nice restaurants and cooling down spots if you're so inclined. Besides, if you want you can go down to the river, there's a nice access point near the Blue Star, throw in a wad of money and feel just like you would if you'd stayed on the much more crowded area of the downtown Riverwalk.

Everyone talks about Riverwalk which is nice but is overrun by tourist trap bars and restaurants. Just a few yards away with parts of Riverwalk as a border is Southtown. The funky King William houses are close , lots of great restaurants like the original Rosarios. Nice low rise apartments with young professionals, fun for kids Hemisphere Park and the Blue Star Art Complex just a walk away. Our headquarters when in San Antonio

Keep S.A weird. Southtown is very unique and offers all sorts of dining experiences. Including an outdoor hang out called "The Friendly Spot" that plays movies on a blow up screen. You'll enjoy the 1st Friday of every month when the block is filled with creative vendors. For sale you will find local art and crafts at reasonable prices. San Antonio's most creative hearts fill these streets and tourist can't get enough of it! It's the perfect mix!

Some of its thunder may have been stolen by the restaurants and shops at the Pearl just north of downtown, but Southtown still has plenty of attractions -- good restaurants, art galleries and stores, and the shady, beautiful King William neighborhood just next door. You can walk here from downtown or take one of the downtown trolleys. Parking can be iffy at some places. Restaurants can be crowded, so build in some wait time, especially at the noon hour or for dinner.

Perfectly charming neighborhood w/just the right amount flavor. I encountered ZERO attitude, had a very good bowl of tortilla soup & cold beer at Tito's. Walked the King William District...the homes are beautiful. Stopped by the Madhatter for a tall cup of hot coffee for the walk back to my hotel. I did all this at dusk and by the time I was ready to walk to my hotel it was dark...I felt safe w/no reservations about doing it again.
