- Christine SSan Antonio, Texas74 contributionsUpdate San FernandoBeautiful cathedral and mass. If Father Carlos is the presiding priest for your mass, you will be overjoyed at listening to him sing. The mass no longer has mariachis due to retirements, etc. This is when most tourists visit. Felt very welcomed. You will be blessed!Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten December 11, 2022
- Francis PAustin, Texas70 contributionsInteresting ArchitectureGreat European architecture. Resembles the churches you see in Spain, France and Prague. The ceilings, arches, and the craftsman ship is second to none. Very beautiful interiors and well kept. Quiet place to connect with the soul.Visited October 2022Written December 12, 2022
- LandogLa Center, Washington174 contributionsBeautiful Cathedral ChurchBeautiful church, undergoing some construction out front. The inside of the cathedral was amazing! We were in the day after the service for the fallen Pope. Very somber feeling. Amazing to see the pipe organ! Beautiful cathedral backdrop! Just amazing! Glad we walked to see it.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 7, 2023
- GoPlaces281634Louisville, Kentucky86 contributionsWorth a visit. Very historic and beautiful. This is a beautiful piece of history. Although the facade is undergoing renovation the church is open. It is beautifully and simple although the main altar and statues are very Spanish looking ornate as opposed to east coast ornate. Very friendly parishioners, we went to Saturday vigil Mass. The gift shop was lovely and had a section on the history of the Cathedral. They even offer confession 7 days a week for almost two hours a day. Amazing anymore. They have the most beautiful statue of the Assumption I think I have ever seen.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 29, 2023

- Taylor BChicago, Illinois8,751 contributionsThe oldest church in TexasNext to the Alamo, San Fernando Cathedral is the most popular attraction in San Antonio, Texas. Built in 1731, it remains the oldest church and most continuously functioning religious community in the Lone Star state. Each weekend, over 5,000 parishioners participate in Masses. Each year, the church hosts over 900 baptisms, 100 weddings and 100 funerals. Not to mention the Good Friday Passion Play that annually attracts thousands of visitors and other concerts, symphonies and television specials. Tour buses arrive constantly. Located at 115 Main Plaza, in the Plaza de Las Islas Canarias, in downtown San Antonio, facing the city's Main Plaza, San Fernando Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the seat of its archbishop. One of the oldest cathedrals in the United States, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. For history buffs, a tomb containing the ashes of the heroes who defended the Alamo in the Texas Revolution of 1836, including Davy Crockett, James Bowie and William Travis, is situated in the back of the cathedral. Bowie was married in the church in 1831. Prior to the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna hoisted a flat of "no quarter" from the church's tower, marking the beginning of the siege. And Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral during the only papal visit to Texas in 1987. A marker commemorates the event.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten March 29, 2023

We really enjoyed the light show that is played on the building most evenings. It's well done and depicts the history of San Antonio.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten May 3, 2023

Gorgeous! The laser light show is astounding and beautiful. The cathedral is stunning inside and it’s our favorite mass so far in San Antonio.

It is a beautiful church. However, my review is specifically regarding the laser light show at night. Do not miss this. I believe it is Tuesday through Friday at 9 o’clock. They may even do a 930 as well but I cannot confirm this.
It was amazing technology to say the least. The show lasted about 25 minutes and was outstanding. It was, something you don’t see anywhere else and, in my opinion, and absolute must during your time in San Antonio.
Across the street is the Watson at the AC hotel. It is a beautiful rooftop bar without standing views and food. I would also make sure to do that either before or after the show.

Beautiful, went to mass here. Great singing by an older gentleman who was part of the congregation. Alamo remains in the front. Looks to be open to quietly walk through on your own.

We didn't tour inside the facility, however we did catch the light show. Check the general schedule for when these take place but they are worth seeing. Was glad it was recommended to us so we could experience it.

We visited the cathedral during the day hours and thought it was a beautiful historic building. We didn’t see any ads for it but later see on fb that they do a light show called the Saga in the evenings.
We made a point of heading over for the 9pm show and loved every second of it. There are a few tables to sit and watch from or plenty of area to spread out and stand. Definitely worth going during the daytime and evening both!

I didn’t see any. The area is flat but the entrance to the cathedral is probably too narrow for a wheelchair. I would call the ticket booth/ gift shop to ask. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific.

There wasn’t parking right at this plaza, but the nearest lot (at 205 W. Nueva Street, San Antonio) is pretty close (within 5 mins) and a pretty level easy walk.. You might get lucky and find some good nearby street parking, but there isn’t much on this block.

You can walk there from the Riverwalk. It’s approximately 2.5 blocks.

What are the visitation hours of the church & the Saga days & times? I cant seem to find any visitation/tour schedule or about the light show viewings. Thanks

The light show is at 9, 9:30 and 10pm on Tuesday, Thurs, Friday, Sat and Sun. There is no "tour" of the cathederal that I know of, it is pretty much self guided. Times are during the day..believe open like 9 to 5. Sundays would not be a good day to go as services would be in session. The light show is amazing, worth seeing 2x.
Is the light show year round?

The light shows at the cathedral are Tuesdays , Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30 and 10:00 pm. A posada is something different. It is a parade that takes place during the Christmas holiday period.
