Surprisingly wonderful visit

Part of the museum was closed due to a 2-month construction project, leaving a fairly small display area. Museum store has prints of some items in the museum collection that are not on display.

Very nice museum facility, just expected more art and some sculptures. What they had was very interesting and enjoyed it very much.

I really hate to start a review by saying the building is more interesting than its contents, but that is the case here. Though there were some interesting themed exhibitions, the overall impression is of a "wannabe," scratching around for material to make its name.

I am a NM resident in my 50's and this was my first time to this museum! I wanted to see the LLoyd Kiva New exhibit as it was soon to expire, but I found myself drawn into other exhibits, such as the one on self portraits. I loved the space-- it felt old and modern at the same time.... More

I will not say that this museum has the finest art, only because one must take in *all* of the State Museums and Buildings and their contents. It takes a week, and could accommodate a longer stay, just to appreciate all that half-a-millennium has brought to this state.

We happened to be parked behind the museum and when we went to go to our car we passed the building and thought let's give it a try. (Happened to be free at the time) So glad we did. It is a wonderful museum. Had some amazing paintings of Native Americans from the early 1900's. Look for the woman wrapped... More

The architecture of the museum is enough reason to visit. Had a great exhibit on self-portraiture with hands on activities for kids. Be sure to ask at desk for other activity sheets for kids...great starters for how to talk with kids (or event adults) about things to look for when viewing art. Be sure to ask about a military discount... More

The exhibits here change on a frequent basis. Besides historic New Mexico artists and artwork; there are photos of low-riders and that culture in New Mexico. It parallels a sister exhibit at the New Mexico History Museum. There is also the Alcove Show. This shows art from 6 artists at a time and changes every 6 weeks. Definitely worth an... More

Nice local museum. Has a lovely Courtyard in the beginning with a lovely granite fountain. Contains some high-quality art but it is small.

Not always sure what I was looking at. Reminds me of the Gardiner Museum in Boston. It pays to spend some time getting acclimated to the set-up.
