Description:

Growing from a backyard, volunteer-run operation, the Alaska Raptor Center...

Growing from a backyard, volunteer-run operation, the Alaska Raptor Center has become Alaska's foremost bald eagle hospital and educational center, as well as one of the state's premier visitor attractions. Each year, the Alaska Raptor Center provides medical treatment to 100-200 injured bald eagles and other birds. Our goal is to release our patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join our Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 36,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 schoolchildren we reach through the Adopt-A-Raptor program and Classroom Presentations around the country. The Alaska Raptor Center's 17-acre campus borders the Tongass National Forest, a temperate coastal rainforest, and the Indian River in Sitka, Alaska, and features award-winning natural habitats for our 19 Raptors-in-Residence.

This is a great way to see and learn about the local animals, not a zoo much much more. All ages can enjoy. We take all of our friends and family to visit when in Sitka.

I really liked this place; to see all the birds, especially the Eagles recuperating from injury and sickness. The indoor facility for the birds to fly around and be ready for the outside world was so good to see. Loved seeing Sitka-the Eagle that has been with them for years was shown to us by the handler. He has been... More

A definite must-see in Sitka. Raptors, especially eagles, in close view. Quick visit. A real treasure in Southeast Alaska.

It rained heavily one day so we went to the raptor center instead of another tour. The presentation about the different birds was very interesting. The volunteers seemed happy to be there and happy to answer questions. The walk around the center featuring various species was fabulous. We will return next time we're in town.

Great place to get up close and personal with not only the eagle but owls as well at this recuperation centre/hospital. Interesting talks available throughout the day with the birds as well. Inside and outside exhibits that are wheelchair accessible. Gift store and restrooms available on site. Great place to visit and learn about these amazing birds. My husband and... More

The ability to see Birds of Prey so close is amazing! Seeing those birds in a wooded landscape added to the positive experience.

This is a superb place to see the rescue and rehabilitation work done with raptors, and to get up close and personal with the truly magnificent birds that are being helped. The small entry fee delivers a large experience and helps to defray running costs -you can stay as long as you like and your photo opportunities will be endless.
