There is an easy loop trail around the crater or you can go over the top and complete a 3.7 mile loop with an uphill and downhill. Good trail surface all the way. Lots of unmarked trails so be sure to pay attention or have...More

Majority of the other trails were closed in the area so we tried this one and it was really nice. With the tall pines the sun was not too hot. Take water though because its a higher elevation and youll need to stay hydrated

Did 3.5 mile hike with my sons in February and the views from top of the hill were rewarding. Peaceful as long as you stayed away from Highway 89. We went on a Sunday afternoon and saw roughly 10 other hikers in the 90 minutes...More

Drove up from Sedona to the Flagstaff area over the weekend for the cooler temps and decided to go for a short hike. The Old Cave Crater trail is about 3 miles round trip to the top and back. Nice views and remnants of the...More

Nice hiking and close to town. The volcano left a very interesting landscape. Not to strenuous, but not grated or level either. Good views of Flagstaff.

Today was the first time I had ever visited this park, and it was very quiet as I hiked up to the lava tubes. Once I got to the top of the trail, there is a clearing where you have a clear view. The lava...More

When Fatman's Loop trail is overrun with hikers, this is a nice alternative for families. A short hike up the hill gets you views and lava caves. Not too strenuous but there are switchbacks.

Old Caves Crater Trail was a happy find. The trail is an easy 2.3 mile return trip with a total elevation gain of 500 feet. If it were not for the hot, mid-day sun and altitude I wouldn't really call it a hike. Much of...More

Nice hike to top with a great view of snow capped mountains and the valley below. Saw a few of the Abert squirrels. Video taped a tarantula walking along just minding its own business. There are quite a few lava vents at the top but...More

Nice trail system with great views & a fun area to explore at the top. Cinders are a little marble-like on the hills, wear trail shoes with good traction. The lower sections are small loose cinder trails & are nice for jogging.
