In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

We were at the Brakers which was beautiful but seemed out of touch for the real person as a home for a family to live. more like a imaginary stage for film recording. The Elms was mor reality and very nice. The RoseCliff was very nice . The men got fast bored of the repetitious scene at every mansion with... More

Magnificent, must see. Just don't start with the Breakers because it's the most breathtaking one. Start with one of the smaller mansions and work your way up to the Breakers. Chateau Le Mer a bit of a headache as they insist on joining a tour and that takes 45 min. If you don't have the time to spare, save it.... More

Easy to drive and see the mansions you wanted to visit. We chose the breakers and the audio tour was great. Parking was easy and we were also able to get parking near the walk.

These mansions are well worth the price of admission. My family has purchased memberships two years in a row. The mansions are well kept, the self guided tours are wonderful, and the information provided is interesting and varied.

OK ... few of us will ever become the Vanderbilt's, but it is so spectacular to see the lifestyles of therich and famous. Touring the mansions give you a true insight into how the wealthy spent their money. And given the low cost (5 mansion tickets for under $40), it is a very reasonable way to spend a sunny summer... There are things I really like., 1 is History and 2 is beautiful surroundings. Newport Mansions are the 2 combined and I could say I enjoyed our trip immensely.

Of course, do the Breakers. I did as one TAer suggested, did The Breakers last like dessert. Up to you if you agree that's a good idea. We were tired by the time we got there and I wish I had been more up to enjoying this spectacular house that brought to life my readings of Wharton. Kids liked it... More

Five mansions for $35. Best deal in town! A slice of life as we wish we could have experienced. Really unbelievable.

Visited the Marble House and The Breakers. Tour was worth the visit to Newport RI. Very historic. Tour takes you on a journey to a life of the past. Audio tour provides flexibility leaving you to decide between a quick or extended tour. My 8 year old was able to follow easily on her own using her own audio equipment.... More
