Far different than the baroque splendor of most Newport mansions, while still a superb attraction. The house is very grand, architecturally rich and amazing, without the robber-baron garish quality that permeates so many of Newport's gilded-age manors. As my friend sad, "It's like Yale, with money." There are some truly amazing works of art - a Van Dyck double-portrait, a... More

The home is beautiful and the grounds are AMAZING!!! The tour is supposed to be about an hour & 20 minutes but ours was over 2 hours (so keep that in mind). There are no photographs allowed. There were several rooms that faced out to the water, but the curtains were closed, which was a disappointment. The grounds are very... More

We have been to Newport many times and have toured all the mansions except Rough Point. When planning this last trip I discovered that Rough Point was opening on the last day of our trip. I purchased a ticket for the first tour online. My husband and I were so glad that we did. Our tour guide was wonderful and... More

We happened upon Rough Point while walking back from the Cliff Walk. I did not know this house was open for tours at the time. We decided to do this tour, and it was the best of the mansion tours. We also did Breakers, Elms and Marble house. Rough Point is not part of the Preservation Society, and therefore costs... More

This was the Doris Duke estate and, in our opinion, the most livable of all the mansions. In addition, Doris Duke was an extraordinary person!

Not the most opulent of mansions in Newport, but the location is incredible and the funkiness of Doris Duke makes it an interesting place.

In 1922, Rough Point, which had been built in 1887 for Frederick Vanderbilt, was sold to James Duke, heir to one of America's tobacco monopolies. James' daughter Doris, then aged 10 and an avid swimmer, immediately fell in love with the site: a rocky promontory jutting out into the turbulent Atlantic. For the remainder of her long life (she died... More

Coming from New Jersey, I am fascinated with Doris Duke and was really looking forward to seeing her house in Newport. And although the grounds and the house itself is truly lovely, I couldn't help but be disappointed by how much of the furniture was under cover - basically all of it. Don't get me wrong, they correctly call this... More
