This tour is excellent and a lot of fun. Mariette is very knowledgeable. We were able to go out on the roof. She lets her guests ask questions and takes her time making sure you see everything. This house has character and you really get a feel for what life as a servant would have been like. I highly recommend... More

Travel with 75 year old mom. Staff very accommodating. Allowed use of servants actual elevator from the time. Great tour... interesting perspective. We did the early morning tour... 930. It was nice, only of us... when we were leaving after the regular mansion tour around noon, the group touring was about 15 people.

I did this tour at the request of my friend I was in Newport with. I had done the mansion tours in years past, so we tried this to do something different. I was really surprised with how much I learned and how much I enjoyed the tour. Our tour guide was great, providing interesting stories and getting the members... More

Step aside antique furnitures and borderline tacky Venus statues! This tour is all about the little people, similar to ones you might see on Downtown Abbey. From where they slept to how they went on strike, this informative tour highlights the stories of some of the men and women who worked at The Elms mansion in Newport during the Gilded... More

This was worth the extra time and stair climbing. We enjoyed the grounds and rooftop views of the water, and the staff stories. I felt a little pushed along because other tours were coming behind us.

Enjoyed seeing “behind the scenes” - very interesting to see the staff’s quarters, learn a little about their life histories and their contributions to the running of the household. Enjoyed seeing the machinations that Mr. Berwind put in place to make sure visitors did not interact with the service staff as they performed their jobs. I think this particular tour... More

Given the excellent review by others, we were surprised that our tour was so empty. We left lacking an appreciation for the servant's life. Yes, we were shown bedrooms and boiler rooms, and told that servants tried once to unionize. But those bedrooms and boiler rooms and firings hold rich stories that were left untold. Tour guides likely vary in... More

After we had used all 5 of our 'package' tours, we paid extra for this one and it turned out to be the most fascinating of all. We went from the roof top to the sub-basement and saw how the house was run 'as if by magic.' I suggest taking the tour of the main house before you do the... More

Informative tour: $15 adults, $5 kids, lasts about 1 1/2 hr. The tour begins by climbing several staircases but an elevator is available should someone need it. Tour is given by a guide who describes the lives, living conditions, duties, and restrictions of servants during the gilded age. The tour spans from the basement to the roof where guests discover... The Servant Life tour was great! We had already done the main house tour so this was very interesting. We got lots more information and were able to see additional areas including the servant bedrooms, laundry room, pastry kitchen, boiler room and coal tunnel. Really interesting to see how it all worked and what servant life was like. Also got... More
