The Newport Art Museum's collections and exhibitions reflect Rhode Island's rich cultural heritage and lively contemporary art scene. We are the only museum to focus on the art and artists of Rhode Island, both historic and contemporary. The Museum is housed in the John N.A. Griswold House and the Cushing Gallery. Home for the Museum since 1916, the Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark and an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Designed in 1862 by architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was completed in 1864 for John N.A. Griswold, a China trade merchant and financier, and his wife Jane. Griswold House was Hunt’s first major commission in Newport and is the premier example of American Stick Style architecture. Hunt went on to design many of the grand cottages of Newport’s Gilded Age, including The Breakers, Marble House, and Ochre Court. To honor artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, an early member of the Newport Art Association, the Association erected the Cushing Gallery in 1920.The Newport Art Museum is one of only 5% of American museums to be fully accredited by the American Association of Museums.

We were lucky that the juried art show was in progress because there is always some new, marvelous work to view. We were not disappointed. The pieces in both buildings were unique and a thrill to see. There are lovely sculptures in the garden as well. The historic former residence is a beautiful place to showcase wonderful works.

Do yourself a favor and avoid giving your money to the people who run this place. Stay outside and appreciate the architecture, but rude and patronizing staff and management who sponsor programs unrelated to its mission (um, art?) is not the way I want my contributions to be used.

An interesting mix of new and old art, sculpture, mixed media. All well presented. Probably took about an hour. Housed in an amazing old building. Worth visiting if you are wandering Bellevue.

I went to see the local showing of Newport Photographers. Quite interesting with a large variety of styles. Walked through and viewed the entire conlection/shows in both buildings, one more historic and the other quite modern.

The Newport Art Museum seemed like the perfect diversion on a rainy afternoon. It is dry inside. The building is an impressive Civil War era stick style mansion (1864 - John Griswald House). The structure is significant as a very early Richard Morris Hunt and the landscape is Olmstead Brothers. The collection is charming and regional but lacking any inspiration.... More

We went to view the art and stayed for a wonderful string quartet concert. The art was not always to my taste, but I did enjoy the house and the experience. However, the string quartet made my day. They were fine quality musicians, had an interesting program and I enjoyed the little bits of information given by two of the... More

we always stop here and find the most amazing pieces even though the museum is small, but in the most gorgeous mansion, there is always a surprise of something new and different.

We very much enjoyed the architecture, the grounds, and the outdoor sculpture. I also valued the emphasis on local Rhode Island artists. A perfectly nice small museum.

Bellevue Ave is filled with mansions. Going to this little but packed art museum is nice option. If you are staying at the Hotel Viking this is in walking distance.
