The Newport Art Museum's collections and exhibitions reflect Rhode Island's rich cultural heritage and lively contemporary art scene. We are the only museum to focus on the art and artists of Rhode Island, both historic and contemporary. The Museum is housed in the John N.A. Griswold House and the Cushing Gallery. Home for the Museum since 1916, the Griswold House is a National Historic Landmark and an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Designed in 1862 by architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was completed in 1864 for John N.A. Griswold, a China trade merchant and financier, and his wife Jane. Griswold House was Hunt’s first major commission in Newport and is the premier example of American Stick Style architecture. Hunt went on to design many of the grand cottages of Newport’s Gilded Age, including The Breakers, Marble House, and Ochre Court. To honor artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, an early member of the Newport Art Association, the Association erected the Cushing Gallery in 1920.The Newport Art Museum is one of only 5% of American museums to be fully accredited by the American Association of Museums.

This is a fun old house, with some pretty good local art, from way back when. Some modern art as well. Not the Met, but good enough for Newport.

a quiet retreat in the action of Newport....the museum is worth a stop for art lovers....its most significant attraction is the annual 'wet paint auction' this is worth the visit where local artists bring their just complete -some still drying -paintings for general auction....its a silent auction followed by and open auction....if this is your cup of tea- get there... Often forgotten by tourists looking at the big mansions, this museum is such a gem. I live in Rhode Island and had been hoping to get over to check it out. It is housed in the Griswold House which is beautiful in its own right. There are two buildings, one which houses the permanent collection, with two galleries of changing... More

The Newport Art Museum is located across the street from the mysterious Newport Tower. There is free two-hour parking on the street. I came in at 3pm and had time to see both buildings before they closed at 4. Beautiful Griswold House is the perfect shell to house art -- you can enjoy the art and enjoy the civil war... More

The Griswold House itself is worth a look - visitors have great access to some lovely period rooms with original features. The art collection ranges from lovely older pieces (including, of course, a couple of Gilbert Stuarts) to interesting modern works utilizing mixed media and techniques, to some frankly weird stuff that makes me wonder who is making the buying... We came to New England to watch our Hurricanes play basketball in Providence. On an off day we came to Newport after looking at Tripadvisor for suggestions. Others did not steer us wrong. The art is OK but the Home is a must see. Make sure you use the smart phone offer of a audio tour. It was very well... More

I recently was supposed to take a workshop that I signed up for next week, and they just sent me an email telling me it will be canceled due to low attendance. Nowhere on their website do they let the consumer know that a minimum number is required. Although they are refunding my money for the class, I purchased quite... More

Hi there, very sorry to hear you are disappointed. We do our best to state all of our policies on this page of our website: http://bit.ly/1P9Wt89. Unfortunately, we are unable to cover costs associated with a class if we have under 6 participants. We were very much disappointed to cancel this great workshop, as well! Again, I'm very sorry for... More

this is a smaller art museum, they have taken a Newport upper set home and merged it with a contemporary museum for an eclectic experience. you walk thru the home's original dining room, library, butler's pantry and experience the architecture of the home and the painting from the previous century. Behind the home is it's second gallery with more contemporary... More

The Newport Art Museum on Bellevue Ave encompasses two separate buildings. It's not a huge museum but the fees are very reasonable and the works are interesting, many related to people involved with Newport's art scene over the years. It's worth a visit.

This one is probably fairly characterized as not what exactly what I was expecting. I was hoping to see some classic art work that was likely brought to Newport by the prominent families of the Gilded Age. Instead what we got was a really cool house tour with some modern to 19th century art. The craftsmanship of the house was... More
