The two places I wanted to go were this (statue) and Pearl Harbor. We decided on doing a day trip from Maui, so there wasn’t a ‘home base’ for us to use in Honolulu. We were honored to be able to go to the Arizona Memorial as well.
The part I didn’t like was the city’s apparent policy on not allowing tourists to use the bathroom in downtown Honolulu. My family and I went to several different establishments and the ungracious nature of most every person we encountered during our “mission” was appalling. One of my family was getting ready to use the sidewalk at one point. Finally someone suggested that we go to District Court and use their facilities. It’s ridiculous, but true that my family had to go through metal detectors first before we were able to finally go to the bathroom. When I contacted the tourist bureau about my concerns….there was a “gosh that sucks” attitude offered, but no shame in the way we were treated. I will not ever be doing business In Honolulu again…won’t be coming back either. I honored my family member at the Arizona memorial, so my peace has been made.
Honolulu if you treat people like animals, people will actually start relieving themselves on the sidewalk. There are better ways to treat people and certainly.. certainly Aloha that could have been offered. Wow!!

Our bus (along with several other tour buses that afternoon) stopped here at the end of the city tour. The area was very crowded and the line to take pictures with the King’s statue was incredibly long! So, the plaques that we would have loved to read underneath the statue could not be read because people taking pictures didn’t want others in front of the King! However, back on the bus the guide told us all about the history of the King. Interesting that this statue is a replica and the original is on the Big Island!

The statue stands prominently in front of Aliiolani Hale in Honolulu, Hawaii. The King was the founder of Hawaii. You got to see if you are in the area

I always try to seek out the history of an area and Hawaii's is most interesting. This is a great photo opportunity and a monument to Kamehameha.

Visiting Hawaii is absolutely amazing! However, make sure to take some time to learn some history. I never learned any Hawaiian history as a student so I made sure to take an opportunity to learn more during my vacation. The statue of King Kamehameha should be a definite stop while visiting Hawaii. However, you will only have an opportunity to see the statue. Make sure to take time to read and expand your knowledge about how King Kamehameha united the Hawaiian Islands in 1810. Also, June 11th of each year is Kamehameha Day. The statue is located directly across from the Iolani Palace which should also be quite interesting to visit.

I drive by this statue at least a couple times on every trip back to Oahu.
Finally decided to stop by and look at the statue up close. Metered parking was available in the lot next to the ali’iolani Hale Supreme Court.
This was not the original statue as the first one was lost in transit (but eventually recovered) when the ship carrying the statue sank near the Falklands Islands. Luckily it was insured and the replacement one installed here while the recovered original was later sent to The Big Island.
Don’t just stop in front of the impressive statue of King Kamehameha I and take your photos like everyone else. There were four plaques on each side of the base that depicted a potential event in his life. As you stand in front of each, look to the ground and see a short explanation of what is shown:
1. On the HMS Resolution ship
2. Implemented The Law of the Splintered Paddle that gave travelers peace of mind when they wanted to sleep along the road
3. Display of Courage showing the King’s martial arts prowess
4. War canoe fleet capable of carrying up to 8000 warriors
Best time to visit and see King Kamehameha I covered in leis would be on Kamehameha Day on or about June 11th every year.

For any person arriving in Honolulu who has ever seen Hawaii 5-0 then a trio to see the King statue is a must, shjnnjng bright in the sun, go and pay a visit

In front of the Hawaii State Supreme Court is a bronze statue dedicated to the unifier of the Hawaiian Islands: King Kamehameha I. Because of him, the islands came under one unified rule. He did this in 1810 following years of conflict. The site of the battle that helped King Kamehameha I conquer Oahu is located at the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. Interesting of note, the first statue was shipped from Europe was lost at sea near Cape Horn. A second statue was created and is the one seen in Honolulu. However, the one that was thought lost appeared and is located on the Big Island. Two other statutes were created and can be found in Hilo and in Washington, D.C. The court building is located across the street from the Iolani Palace.

There is metered parking on the grounds of the Palace. If you park there, you can visit the palace, statue and the capital all at the same time. Give your self about three hours and you can see everything.
