Beautiful statue and fantastic views. Right on the Waikiki beach. Fresh flowers and local to restaurants and shopping

The statue stands proudly by the beach. It’s arms outstretched adorned with beautiful orchid Leis. When the wind blows you can actually smell them. How people get them up there is a mystery as the statue is tall.

Most of the time there is a line by Duke’s statue of people waiting to take pictures with him. He was definitely a surfing legend in Hawaii. The statue is really nice and a landmark at Waikiki beach. The park, sandy beach and ocean behind him are very nice and scenic but busy. People leave their leis on this statue. It’s also nice to see it in the evening.

It's a beautiful statue that honors an interesting and accomplished man who is considered the father of modern surfing. Very cool area.

Very pretty through here! A must walk around. There are some homeless people around however. But they didn't bother us.

Most visitors to Waikiki probably walk by this statue and don't bother to read the plaque at its foot. I had never heard of Duke Kahanamoku before, so reading about his history and contributions to popularize surfing was quite fascinating. The good news is that the statue is more or less a landmark in Waikiki beach, so it can't be missed. If you pass by it, take a minute or two to stop and read the plaque which will make you appreciate the man in the statue in a different light.

You may dislike Waikiki (I personally really liked it to my surprise) but there is a cool vibe around this area despite the concrete jungle, traffic, homeless (the last very sadly common in this particular area of Waikiki/Oahu) - it's the surfers in the background, the Diamond Head and of course this statue of Duke Kahanamoku - I am not a surfer, haven't surfed in my life but felt the magic in the place and really enjoyed the early morning stroll in the area with a cup of great coffee from the nearby cafes.

Something I would call "a must" while in Oahu - the "surfing vibe" and shaka are all Hawaiian but out of our 3 weeks on the 4 main islands we "felt it" the most in Oahu, in this spot, I guess it's maybe the spirit of the Duke in the air :)

TIP: if you wake up like us early due to the jetlag/time difference I encourage you to grab a coffee at Honolulu Coffee near by and come here, it's super cool to watch people getting ready with the sunrise to catch the waves... something very special!

I became interested in the life of Duke Kahanamoku after seeing his statue along Waikiki Beach last summer.  This year my son had a Surf’s Up Birthday party so I purchased a book about Duke for the guests to sign and for him to read.  Also, I thought it was important for him to also see his statue located on Waikiki Beach. Duke was not only an Olympian, actor, and a pioneer for surfing.  Duke Kahanamoku was an honorable man who possessed the beautiful spirit of Native Hawaiians.  Take a moment to not only stop and see the statue but take some time to learn about the man behind the statue. His story is quite amazing!!!
