Just up the road from the very busy Manoa Falls trailhead you'll find the Lyon Arboretum. An oasis of calm, with beautiful gardens and some hiking trails. Admission and parking are free but a $5 donation is recommended. You'll definitely want insect repellent, though. This is rain forest, and the mosquitoes are fierce. The trails in the arboretum are a... More

A good place for seeing what's left of the Hawaiian fauna on Oahu. Great afternoon hike with family. Bring bug spray!

It was great to get away from the city and experience the beauty of Hawaii. You can walk all over the gardens and see all sorts of flowers and huge trees. I was with a tour group and we got a guided tour. Learned a lot about native plants and the area. It is a rain forest like area, so... More

The gardens are free, but there is a place to give donation. This is a very interesting study of local plants of the region. The hike is wonderful and beautiful. You can get a map of the trails and very easy to walk. Take bug spray....

I am a 'reluctant botany park visitor' and am generally pulled along on these kinds of adventures with my partner who is a "plant person". We visited Lyon a day after hiking Manoa Falls. In comparison - I loved this experience. The main trail was well maintained, but hikers could branch off and bush whack in many places! The waterfall... More

See my review of Manoa Falls. This is a really nice place with the hiking trail up to the Falls. Take lots of pictures.

High above Honolulu is the Harold L. Lyon Arbretum affiliated with the University of Hawaii and with free admission to the grounds. Open Moday - Friday 8am-4pm, Saturday 9am-3pm and closed on Sunday, if you have a rental car there is ample parking near the greenhouse and visitor center. There are a variety of specialized areas with emphasis on native... More

We noticed the arboretum as we were walking out of the falls. I was lured in by the beautiful colours on the trees & just kept walking up and around. We didn't actually see anybody, but only inspected the plants. It filled twenty minutes and I got some good photos. I think this is a nice aside to the falls.

What a relaxing place this is! It would be so easy to spend several days here to look at all of the different gardens, plants, and flowers. We also saw a lot of birds during our walk.
