It's taken us years to visit Shangri La and it was worth it. There are 3 tours daily but only Wednesday through Saturday. They fill up fast so book well in advance. We started at the Honolulu Museum of Art and parking was a challenge. We ended up at the Neil Blaisdell Arena parking but that can be a problem... More

This was like visiting a royals home. Money was not a concern when this was being constructed and furnished. Great ocean front with boat slip. Make reservations months in advance to get in because it fills up fast and there are not a lot of people on your tour. A definite highlight.

An incredible collection of Islamic Art housed in a beautiful, livable house. The site is gorgeous, the house provides a welcome relief from the sun, and the house is amazingly peaceful. The art is arranged to be part of the house, not like a museum display. Worthy of multiple trips - the tour guides focus on the house, not really... More

We had visited the Doris Duke house in Newport RI, so when we visited Honolulu decided to see this too. Paradise. Not to be missed.

The tour for Shangri-La is arranged through the Honolulu Museum of Art. Advance reservations are required and the tour leaves from the museum downtown. The permit for the tours requires no tourist cars can be brought to the residential neighborhood, so you must go in and out on the tour bus. The guides are knowledgeable but really trained never to... More

First, be sure to book this before you leave home (with the Honolulu Art Museum). This is Doris Duke's 5 acre home in Honolulu. It is a wonderful site, built during the Depression with a world-class Islamic art collection (better than most museums) arranged so that Ms. Duke could live with her collection. Totally wonderful! The home is modern and... More
