Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

We were just driving past and saw the blow of a whale. Pulled in and watched. We could see many whales, not that close to shore so bring binoculars. It was midweek and the parking lot was still jammed but worth it for a great view.

There was plenty of parking and the trail is paved to the top. From the top one can see down two of the coasts with fantastic views. It is worth a stop while on Oahu.

Nice trail on the east side of Oahu. The trail is paved and not too steep; great for beginners and kids. Its about 1.35 miles from start to end; 2.7 miles roundtrip. You can pretty much see everything in about two hours. Parking is very limited on weekends so make sure to go early.

Just like many other view in Hawaii, this one is breath taking. Never fails to impress even though I hike there so many times. Relatively easy hike, but always make sure that you bring water, wear sunscreen and hold your hat tight because it can be windy in some areas. Go in the morning or after 4pm.

What’s attractive about the hike is: 1 - it’s a short ascent, just around 1.5km. 2 - the view at the top is breathtaking, of the scenic shoreline of Makapu’u beach stretching toward the North Shore, of southeastern Oahu including the inside of Koko Crater, crystal tide pools and waves breaking dramatically against the base of the cliff far below.... We really expected the focus to be the lighthouse, but the trail actually bypasses the light house and goes to the peak of the hill. We realized that at one point, and continued on top get the view and some pictures of the spectacular views, and read some stuff on the lighthouse, but I really wanted to get into the... More

Loved this short 4km walk.. it is all paved, great for a stroller if you have kids. This view was unreal and we saw whales. Best part its free, no parking fee or random hike fee lol.

Nice to get away from the city hustle & bustle. Photo options are breathtaking. Take #22 to Sea Life park. Walk 3/4 mile to entrance and then it is a gentle mile up. Baby strollers & cyclists here. Some people ran up - not me! I want to see the view
