A Nice Shopping Mall, but Nothing More
When in Waikiki in June 2023, we explored the International Marketplace, which I had remembered from prior visits. I had heard about the closure of the old place some time ago and was surprised to hear that it was still around and did not know what the change was like until we got there. It was unrecognizable and even the banyan tree gave no hint of its former character. The old place was a characterful, interesting, and fun place to shop and eat in an old-school Hawaii atmosphere, with numerous small vendors, and as a kid I loved the old restaurant upstairs which seemed like it was a treehouse. Now, it's just a big fancy shopping mall with an old Banyan tree and a sign for the old Don the Beachcomber treehouse, which is long gone. The thing there now is a modern imitation. It is definitely a nice shopping mall, and attractive, with what appear to be some good places to eat and shop, but it's just a shopping mall and I see no point in ever hanging out in one, especially not when I'm on vacation. It lacks character and could be any nice, high-end shopping mall in the world, but for the Banyan tree and open layout. Despite my lamentations over replacing the original with a characterless place like this, I feel compelled to give this four stars instead of fewer, but only because it is "nice." I would be hard pressed to give more to a shopping mall. Otherwise, especially with the loss of the old place, I'd give it no more than 3. Moreover, while it seems like a good place to go for those who live there, I really cannot see why anyone who's on holiday in Waikiki would travel all the way to Hawaii and spend any time at a place they could essentially find at home. If you want to go to a place that has a big banyan tree, they're all over Hawaii, including an old, iconic one with a nice restaurant and bar a few blocks away at the Moana Hotel.
Aloha jenedc2016, Thank you for your feedback. We regret to learn that your recent visit to International Market Place fell short of your expectations. While our newly reimagined center is different than the Polynesian-inspired village it once was, we take pride in the new ways we're able to celebrate and honor Hawaiian Cultural, particularly Queen Emma and the royal family, in a way that the previous center did not, through design and activations like Don Ho's stature, O Na Lani Sunset Hula Show and our (interactive) Cultural Journey. We do hope you'll visit us again soon and rediscover all that we have to offer. Mahalo and Warmest Regards!

    Loved this place!
Loved this place. So much fun. Lots of food options on each floor. Amazing stores for all price ranges and interests. Staff everywhere was friendly. The location itself was beautiful. We only had time to walk through the open air top floor but it was beautiful and I had seen reviews that were great for several of the restaurants there. We had the poke on the second floor which was delicious! The passport to Shopping discount book had lots of relevant items and I was able to get an amazing gift after my purchase at the restaurant (of a certain minimum). Noah at the customer service desk was especially friendly, informative, and helpful. Can't wait to visit again on my next trip.

    Nice mall
Stayed at the Sheraton next door so spent a lot of time walking thru it. It’s 3 floors with elevators and escalators There’s a food court on the ground level, on Kuhio side and some restaurants on the 3rd level. There’s an abc store in the mall as well. It was nice to walk thru and see the banyan tree

    Oahu Trip Sept 2023
My husband and I recently came back from our honeymoon to the island of Oahu. We stayed at a hotel close by to International Village, so we often frequented walking through the mall. Right from the get go, we were so touched by how friendly and welcoming everyone was while shopping and eating. One of the nights we were passing through, we happened to catch a hula show. It was fantastic! Overall we had an amazing experience chatting with staff members in the smaller independent shops, getting to know the community a little bit. We'd also like to give Noah at Customer Service a special mention. He went above and beyond our expectations with his hospitality, kindness and generosity. He made our last night in Hawaii that much more memorable. Mahalo!
Dear Adrienne0202, Thank you so much for your kind words. We are so glad that you were able to visit us and enjoyed yourselves. International Market Place is like home.
I come to International Marketplace at least once a week. Whether if it is for a coffee at Kona Coffee Purveyors, shopping for a gift or for myself at Anthropologie, Shinola or Aesop, a dessert at Magnolia, or lunch or dinner at Liliha Bakery or Herringbone. I grew up coming to IMP since a toddler with my parents and still coming, because it feels like home.

Definitely worth a visit in Waikiki
This was our first visit to Waikiki and it was definitely lucky that we booked a hotel right next to the international market. We ended up going there everyday to browse the shops, buy snacks from the abc store, and of course go to Liliha Bakery to get mochi doughnuts. The staff was very friendly, especially Noah at the customer service stand. To our surprise, with our many visits we were able to spend $250 for get a free Tiki mug. If there are any collectors, Noah told us that this will be a special promotion they do every year. Stop by to see if you can still snag one!
Hi Gregdlee00, Mahalo for the great review and your patronage. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit at the International Market Place. We definitely look forward to your next visit, so please don't be a stranger. Feel free to check with Customer Service should you want to know about future promotions and events in the mall. Our fave
Our favorite Waikiki shopping center with great retailers, food and entertainment. On this last visit we went to Martin & MacArthur to look at a particular painting, and we also ended up having a great lunch at Mitsuwa Market and shopping at many of the stores. The best parking in Waikiki too!
Aloha 808kirk, We are really happy to hear that International Market Place is you favorite! Thank so much for taking the time to write this kind review. Please don't be a stranger. A Great Place To Take Your Family
My family and I liked the mall. It is very spacious, and has many places to relax. My son was able to play in the middle courtyard grassy area, which he certainly enjoyed. The Japanese food court has great tempura. We'd definitely eat there again. My wife was very happy that the customer service representative (Jun?) was able to speak with her in Japanese. She said that he was kind and helpful. We'd definitely plan to visit the International market Place again.
Dear 124yuichik and Family, Mahalo for your warm words. We are so glad that you and your ohana came and spent time with us. We are really happy to hear that you enjoyed your meal at Endo Tempura. We will definitely let them know. Should you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to call us. Better yet, come say hello at the Customer Service desk. Thank You and Best Regards!

    Nice place to visit
This location has really changed in the 39 years since we had been there. It is a fun place to visit and look at the stores. The third floor has restaurants. There are plenty of place to sit, relax, and people watch. ABC store good for items you forgot to bring.

Last time we visited was back in Dec 2013 before the remodel. We were sad that it was going to be torn down. Now 2020, our first time back to the International Market Place. We were expecting the worse--a sterile commercial mall that looks like any US mall. We were pleasantly surprised.

Love that the old banyan tree is still prominent and a centerpiece of the mall. Yes, it's full of upscale/pricey shops & restaurants, but still a pleasant place to visit for shopping & eating. Plenty of comfy seating and there's even a display of photos of the old International Market Place in its hey-day. There's a Mitsuwa grocery store where you can pick up some reasonably priced eats.

On November 13, 2023, an extraordinary event unfolded during my visit to the International Market Place in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. Following an exploration of the mall, I entered the restroom to freshen up and change my shirt. Having spent three delightful hours capturing the beauty of Waikiki Beach, I was taken aback when, upon checking my bag, my newly acquired Samsung tablet was nowhere to be found.

Realizing that I had inadvertently left it behind during my earlier restroom visit, I experienced a surge of anxiety given the substantial foot traffic within the mall during the intervening hours. Despite the odds, I decided to seek assistance and approached the customer service desk. There, I had the privilege of speaking with Noah, an individual whose exemplary service left a lasting impression.

Expressing my concern about the lost tablet, I was met with unexpected relief as Noah informed me that the tablet had been discovered by the diligent housekeeping staff in the restroom. Their prompt and honest actions salvaged what seemed like a dire situation. I am sincerely grateful for the integrity displayed by the International Market Place's housekeeping team and especially to Mr. Noah for his commendable assistance.

This experience has reinforced my belief that the International Market Place is not only a captivating destination but also a secure and trustworthy environment. Despite my oversight, the professionalism and honesty exhibited by the staff have left an indelible mark, reaffirming that visitors to this establishment are indeed in good hands. A heartfelt thank you to the housekeeping team and Mr. Noah for turning what appeared to be a hopeless situation into a miraculous recovery. Above all, gratitude is extended to the higher providence that orchestrated this unforeseen resolution. “God is good “ as what Mr. Noah told me .

Wow, I’m so glad my friend and I discovered this shopping center. I just wished we did so earlier. This place has every type of store you can imagine plus a wide range of restaurants and bars. I’m a sucker for an indoor/ outdoor shopping center. I love how the trees were growing in the middle and lit up by twinkling lights. There were so many levels to this center too.

International Market Place is a great place to browse around the shops if you need a break from the sun. The staff at the information desk are very helpful and friendly. We love the restaurants there, especially for happy hour. Eating House, Moani and Herringbone. The Kona coffee shop has great coffee and amazing desserts and pastries but go early because the line gets super long. We wish that International Market Place had a playground for kids, on rainy days it would draw locals and visitors to spend time and shop there. We also miss the free hula show in the evenings….that was always a huge draw for us during the week after cocktails on the grand lanai.

I wholeheartedly recommend visiting the Customer Service over at the International Market Place in Waikiki. Jon's unparalleled customer service and impressive professionalism and knowledge have left me thoroughly impressed.
Jon always recommends the perfect restaurant depending on me and my mood, budget and occasion.

As a local, and I am sure like many others can resonate, the crowd and the lack of parking make it difficult and discouraging for people to visit Waikiki from elsewhere. Then come International Marketplace. This longstanding establishment has been my go-to place whenever I visit Waikiki with friends or the in-laws, because of the amble, spacious parking stalls and the variety of shops and restaurants. There is Mitsuwa Marketplace for your groceries and Japanese goods, Kona Coffee Purveyors for your freshly baked pastries and artisan coffee, and Liliha Bakery to get your local grindz and their coco puffs. Did I also mention they host a market (I think twice a week, forgot the days) with local businesses selling souvenirs, fresh produce, and food. Parking is pretty reasonable at $3/hour with validation ($10 minimum purchase at one of their shops) and you are only a few minutes away by foot to Kuhio Beach. Highly recommended!

Very disappointing. The only reason we gave it 3 stars was because we saw Kimo and Leilani Kahoano's hula show but from the YouTube video I saw it looks like Kimo was saying farewell. We used to meet friends at the IM but not anymore.

If your market research told you that this is the best remake of an iconic location in Waikiki I would get a new formula. Nobody wants to go here anymore.

Aloha MJMJ-Aloha, We regret to learn that your most recent visit to International Market Place did not meet your expectations. We understand and respect that our reimagined center has changed in ways that may not be favored by all and we hope that as we grow and settle, we'll be able to offer new memories and experiences that can be appreciated by visitors and locals alike. We take pride in the ongoing efforts to celebrate and honor our storied past that includes not just the former International Market Place known to most, but also the land of Kaluaokau which once belonged to Queen Emma, and the overall ahupua'a of Manoa that includes Waikiki area. Throughout our center you'll notice details such as water features representing the 'Apuakeahu Stream and Waiakekaua falls, plants favored by Queen Emma, etched musical lyrics on our elevators honoring Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV, unique imagery of the native Hawaiians who lived and worked the land of the area, the iconic Banyan Tree and more that pay tribute to the many important pieces of our history that weren't afforded the opportunity to be celebrated and honored in past iterations of the market place. We invite you to explore our Cultural Journey on our website at https://shopinternationalmarketplace.com/cultural-journey/ or in person throughout our center indicated with informational plaques placed throughout Level 1 & 2. While our O Na Lani Sunset Hula Show is currently on hold, we do have plans to continue sharing our history through Hula in the coming months. We’re also excited to share that we’re welcoming some fantastic new locally owned and operated restaurants to our Grand Lanai including the iconic Liliha Bakery, Moani Waikiki and Skybox Taphouse. We do hope you'll visit Waikiki again and that you'll consider giving us another chance to share our Aloha. Mahalo, Malia Zannoni Marketing & Sponsorship Director

Truly the heart of Waikiki, the International Market Place is the perfect oasis in the center of the world's most exciting neighborhood.

Be sure to watch their free show: O Nā Lani Sunset Stories Hula Show on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday evening.

With everything from an ABC Store to pick up on the go items, to fast casual dining on the main floor and fine dining on the third floor, a variety of shops in all price ranges, evening entertainment, a luau, and a variety of special events and classes (check with the concierge) this is our favorite spot to shop in Waikiki!

As a local, Waikiki can be a little overwhelming at times, but International Marketplace has ample and easy to access parking (probably one of the best lots in Waikiki), and a great assortment of retailers and restaurants to make the trip to Waikiki well worth it! Moani Island Bistro has great local food as well as live entertainment, and the only Mitsuwa on island is a must! The shopping center has a great atmosphere and is very walkable with ample shading and greenery around to make for a very pleasant shopping experience!

Visiting Honolulu for the first time in a little over 10 years. My kids wanted to bring back some cheap souvenirs for their friends, so I suggested the international marketplace. I was expecting the same carts and street vendors from a decade ago. Instead I found a very, very, expensive shopping mall. Honolulu hardly the relaxing tropical paradise most people expect. It wasn't 10 years ago either, but now it's worse. A lot worse. I have never been to Tokyo before, but somehow I think I've got a glimpse. Nothing traditional Hawaii there anymore. I won't be going back. If I wanted overcrowded and overpriced, I go to New York City. It's closer.

Aloha Vince R, Thank you for your feedback. We regret to learn that our reimagined center fell short of your expectations. We like to think that we have something for everyone. In regards to "cheap souvenirs," we do have stores like Lani Beach who offer them at very very competitive price points. As we continue to look for ways to bridge the present to the past, we're excited to have the Mahiku Farmers' Market back at the center every Thursday to offer shoppers a more diverse selection of goods and products. We do hope you'll visit us again soon and rediscover all that we have to offer. Mahalo and Aloha!
