...two trails here that are getting mixed up in the reviews. Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail and Kaiwi Shoreline Trail, and I was on both yesterday. They use the same parking, and the big sign off the main road says Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline. Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail is the more traveled, paved one going up to the lighthouse with stunning views - yes you can do it in flip-flops. I wouldn't (again) on Kaiwi Shoreline Trail which is pretty rocky at times; I almost slipped and busted something. Whatever - I veered off the trail when I came to a divide and found a great little beach that was fairly secluded especially being a Saturday: not too many people and only one dog swimming. I think it's called Alan Davis Beach, and here is where you get closest to Pele's Chair - a kinda iconic rock formation. Hey I went a little further this way and found some rocky tidal pools with crystal clear water. This is where I took a dip and washed the funk off from the climb up to Makapu'u Lookout. The water was so relaxing that I kinda felt buzzed from it all, so I didn't finish the rest of the Kaiwi Trail and went back to my car. Coming here was a nice way to spend an afternoon and got some good exercise and maybe even water therapy no less.

Generally it is a better trail than Makapuu Trail. It is free and it's about a 2.5 miles round walk. If you are lucky enough, like us, you'll have a beautiful day. I recommend to start early cause it can get crowded later in the day and bring water for there lots of sun and hardly any shade. Anyone who been there knows it's a very nice trail, and I'm sure most people will enjoy Ka'iwi and will appreciat its quietness. The trail starts right next at the end of the parking lot just before the Makapuu Lighthouse hike take unpaved road to the right hand side. 😎

This trail was so great for our whole family. It was paved from bottom to the top and nice and wide The kids felt like they were just walking up a large hill the whole time. We have a 6,8,11 and 12year old with us and they all managed just fine on this trail . They probably found this trail one the easiest between Diamond Head, and the Pill box on the North shore trails. We stopped at this beautiful lookout about 1/2 way up to watch some whales jumping. Pretty much from almost all the lookouts we would just watch and look for the blow holes. We were there mid February which I am thinking is whale 🐳 season. The views at the top were breathtaking. Loved this trail 🤙

We hiked up to the Makapu'u lighthouse where there are fabulous views all around. There were sea turtles swimming in the waters below. Sometimes you can see whales breaching here. It's definitely worth the hike down to the tidal pools for a swim - this trail is about 3/4 way up. Take plenty of water and proper hiking footwear. No flip flops if you want to climb down to the tidal pools. Plan for about 3 hours total here.

We did this hike with a double stroller and three kids. It was a bit tough due to the steep grades and no shade but the views were breathtaking! Definitely worth the hike!

I was fortunate to be picked up and my hotel by 2 friends and their dogs for an outing to Kaiwi shoreline. We began with a hike up to the Makapu'u. My friends brought pocket binoculars which made it even more fun as we saw whales. Then we hiked down to the tidal pools, where we explored and even swam with the 2 dogs! The lava rock is sharp in places and slippery in places. Good footwear is a must. Also water for yourself and any canines! I have tried studying the Oahu transit system to see if one can get there by bus but haven't figured it out. If anyone knows, I'm sure the information would be appreciated on Tripadvisor for Kaiwi.

It was our 2nd Trail of the day with our flip-flop. Stopped because we saw a lot of cars parking at one spot and reckoned that there should be something.
Read the sign before you start head up to the top...Of course we didn't do that!!!
For the first 30 mins...we just kept walking and there is no sign showing you where we were and what you would be seeing...We thought of giving up but glad that we didn't...up there, you'll be amazed by the beautiful panoramic views
Btw....if you are lucky enough, like us, you'll see Humpback whale.

This is a Must Do hike on Oahu. Parking can be a bit tight, but it’s free and you will find a spot even it’s a bit far from the trailhead. This is a paved walking path for a little over a mile up to an great lookout point and there is a lighthouse near the top as well (the hike does not really get you that close to it though).
The breeze is so nice as you ascend and the sea views are spectacular. Coming down seems way easier and faster than coming down. Just do this one!
