If you are a civil war buff, this is a great battlefield to visit. The 16 mile long driving tour provides a great perspective of how the siege took place and the skirmishes the happened during. The Navy also has a nice museum built around a raised and reconstructed civil war gunboat. Even if only passing through Vicksburg, I would... More

Vicksburg has been on our bucket list for several years, so when we were in Louisiana, we drove out of our way 400 miles round trip to finally see it. Was it worth it? Definitely. We happened to arrive on Presidents' Day and were pleasantly surprised to learn that the park entrance fee was waived in honor of the national... More

Be sure to watch the video at the visitors center but also go to the museum part and watch the map explanation as it gives a great overview of the whole area and lights up the places on the map. We enjoyed also that we could go at our own pace around the park. We had planned to use the... More

We are on this trip to look at Civil War history...this is a must see! I HATE it that Tripadvisor dictates how much I must write about each place but that's why you are getting the extra narrative. Sometimes brevity is best.

Neither my husband and I knew anything beyond high school history (40 years ago) about the Civil War so we hardly qualify as Civil War buffs but we really enjoyed our tour of the Park. Our BnB loaned us a CD with a guided audio tour but you can just drive around and read the plaques at each stop. We... More

We only had an hour, which isn't nearly enough. There is a massive amount of information, memorials, views, museums, for any history buff, or civil war aficionado, this is a must visit.

You can spend a little time or a lot. History buffs can spend days experiencing the Civil War or you can spend a couple of hours and still feel the pain of Vicksburg. The park includes the USS Cairo Museum. The auto tour is enhanced by a phone system that describes highlights. It is all free, but private guides are... More

First time visit for us. I had just read "Vicksburg is the Key" - very good book. You'll get more out of your visit the more you know ahead of time, but regardless the park is great. I recommend getting a tour guide - so much wonderful extra information that adds atmosphere to the entire experience. Would not have been... More

We really enjoyed our visit to the National Military Park. It is very nicely maintained. There's a lot to see and go there. We started with the video at the visitors center and went from there. I would definitely recommend 2.5 to 3 hours to view the whole park.

The story of the Civil War battle for Vicksburg is one of the epic tales of the Civil War. Once you travel the terrain the troops on both sides had to manage, the more you appreciate the tremendous test the battle created for attackers and defenders alike. Do not miss the Cairo museum. The remains of this Union gunboat were... More
