- luan cSunnyvale, California7 contributionsWaterfalls that “inspired” the Reykjavik landmark churchSvartifalls (Black falls) is located in Skaftafell Nature Reserve in the Vatnajökull National Park, southeast Iceland. It is framed by black color basalt column beautifully, hence the name. The trails from the parking lot is around 30 minutes uphill hike, it’s worth the “sweat”as when you get there, the view is breathtaking and it looks so different from the others. The trials have view points of the Nature reserve. Big thumbs up. Some Icelanders say Svartifalls inspired the design of the HallgrĂmskirkja church in Reykjavik.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 30, 2024
- Kysoccerdad17Crestwood, Kentucky10 contributionsVery nice falls, worth the hike!At the end of a long day in the rain, we considered skipping Svartifoss but the rain let up a bit and we decided to make the uphill trek. Hundafoss was a nice side benefit but the payoff was clearly well worth the hike. We’re waterfall fans and it’s probably not in my top 5 waterfalls on this trip but Skaftafell overall is still a great stop.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 27, 2024
- Chad2014Gainesville, Florida240 contributionsBeautiful and unique waterfall after a reasonable hikeThis waterfall is completely worth seeing because it is so picturesque and unique. It's not as big as some of the others which is fine. The hike to it is fun and doable for anyone in good health. I was, however, frustrated by the lack of good signage. It is very easy to start down the wrong path and visit the glacier instead of the waterfall by mistake. The correct path is NOT next to the visitor center but to the left a ways, make sure you are on the correct path.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten September 16, 2024
- heartsmartassPort Coquitlam, Canada22 contributionsA definite stop! The main falls are framed by black color basalt columns that make it stunning to view. The trails from the parking lot is around 30-40 minutes uphill hike. Very steep at the beginning and gets somewhat easier to the falls.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2024

I paid the paring fee and later decided to stay in the campground (guests do not have to pay for parking on the arrival day). I asked the admin to return the fee, he replied something like "working on the task" but I never received a dime back. And never heard of them anymore. Sad

This waterfall is beautiful, but it requires a fairly long and strenuous hike uphill to get there. The signs are also a bit confusing; when we got to the first sign with a map (after studying it hard) we chose to turn left along a flat path. This path took us past several streams and a cozy place where lambs were kept before turning uphill to go to the waterfall.
A small car costs 750ISK to park, but the water closet is free. There’s also a food stand near the visitor center.

I actually felt this was my favorite waterfall in Iceland after I did the Ring Road. It's not the biggest or tallest or any other superlative. But it had a very pleasant setting and appearance that made me want to spend the day just sitting and watching. The columnar basalt formations are amazing and unique. I did the big loop that goes to the waterfall and then out to SjĂłnarnĂpa viewpoint for a view of the glacier. My Apple Watch glitched and so I don’t know my exact distance and time. But the trail is supposedly 5 miles. I highly recommend the relatively short hike to see the waterfall. Continuing to the viewpoint depends on your level of fitness and the weather since my view was partly obscured by clouds.

We decided to opt for the S2 hike in Scaftafell as we had a lot of other areas we planned to see on the day we visited. Estimated at a 45minute 1 way hike, it starts with a steep incline for a good 20-30 minutes until you reach the top of the hill. On the way up you will pass 2 additional waterfalls before it levels out - these provide some good vantage points along with a stop to catch your breath.
Once you arrive at Svartifoss there is no mistaking which waterfall you are at, with the basalt columns framing the falls it is quite the sight! From a top the hill you can see Svartifoss off in the distance, you can also walk down to get much much closer to it from the bridge and the lower viewing platform.
All in all we managed to do the S2 hike in around 1hr 10 minutes - about 20 minutes quicker than the estimate but we do a lot of physical activity. Even with this however the incline portion was a good task!

The area has a (paid) parking area and there's a visitor center, as well as some food stands at the starting point. The waterfall itself is reachable through a nice (but partly uphill, so take it into account) walk and there are a few marked hiking routes that take you along beautiful creeks, some other waterfalls and some great views of the plains below. Nice place for birdwatching and photography. When we visited it was busy, but definately not too crowded.

We began the hike to this waterfall at 6 in the morning as we had such an action packed day and we didn't want to miss it. The hike was all uphill getting to the waterfall, but the path was very well maintained with just a few icy patches at the end. The waterfall was amazing and you pass 2 other waterfalls on the way. We were back in the car by 7.30 (and this was with 2 children) Glad we did it. Early in the morning was just lovely as you hear all the birds and there are no people. Please note the parking costs money.

Svartifoss is another beautiful waterfall in Iceland in Vatnajokull Natl Park. It's a predominantly uphill hike for a little over a mile. The views are spectacular and there's an overlook for another waterfall (I believe it is actually a lower part of Svartifoss) on the way up. Other than being uphill the hike is not difficult, the trail is well maintained. The very regular and even basalt columns around the waterfall make this a must see. We really enjoyed hiking to it!

Quite an easy 1 hour walk from the campground will get you to this waterfall and as this is one of the nearest and easiest walk here in the area of Skaftafell, be prepared for more people on this hike. Neverthless, the waterfull is very nice with its basal columns. For me it was interesting to watch little water drops dripping down from basal columns as if they were taken out from a slowed-down animated movie.

This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. More than the waterfall itself, the basalt columns formations are more enthralling! Approx 2km one way; A bit of steep hike for those not accustomed to walking; but the steep incline is roughly for 1km only. The view though once you get there is breathtaking.

How is the falls during winter December? is the water frozen? what about the path, would mere walking cleats sufficient?
Written October 16, 2019
Can only comment for September. Guessing it will be colder and probably snowy in December. When dry, decent walking shoes or even trainers are fine. If snowy then waterproof hiking boots/crampons probably better. It's a 3.5km hike there and back.

hi everyone! i read about a shorter 1.4km hike to Svartifoss Waterfall, which requires us to park a distance away from the visitor centre. Is that hiking trail still open? We are going in late June. Thanks!

If there is I didn’t see it. Sorry...

Hi, how long does it take to hike to the waterfall? I am a very bad hiker. I need to prepare my mind fully before attempting to see this waterfall :)
Written June 10, 2019
The hike is not very long (2 km, around 40 minutes, up to 1 h). It is not very challenging and the main footpath is wide well maintained. The waterfall is definitely worth it!

Hi all,
I am wondering if you think it is realistic and achievable to reach Svartifoss waterfall with 2 young children? We'll have an infant in a baby carrier and a 4 year old. Is it a dangerous hike or relatively easy? How long would you allow for the trip there and back... 90mins?
Thanks

We saw young and old last August 10. Quite a busy trail actual. Over an hour in with a 4 year old I would say. (We actually parked further along the road to avoid the crowds of cars parked at the main entrance, and walked a shorter steeper section before joining the main very busy trail).

How long would it take to hike to SjĂłnarnĂpa waterfall & back? Been seeing a 3 hour average but cant tell if its a round trip or one way.
Thank you!!
Written June 19, 2018
Three hours would be round trip unless you are a really slow walker. We like to stop, explore, check out wildlife, plant life, etc and did it in under 3.

Ciao e grazie

Vai tranquillo con i jeans. Al massimo come giĂ ti consigliavano un sovrapantalone se piove. Goditi questa meraviglia!!

Is there a tour from a ReykjavĂk that takes in the Svartifoss waterfall? I have looked at all sorts of day tours, but none seem to stop there.

Agreed with all the above answers. It's easily done on your own and worth the effort!
