About
La Maddalena Archipelago National Park is a geomarine protected area consisting of a group of islands situated in the north-east of the coast of Gallura, in the stretch of sea between Sardinia and Corsica known as Bocche di Bonifacio. These islands – except for La Maddalena Island housing the homonymous town and characterized by a significant human presence – are entirely deserted or scattered with small human settlements, like in Caprera and Santa Maria Islands.

So, if you're going to Sardinia or Corsica, make sure you get to do a tour of the archipelago surrounding La Maddalena Island tucked in to the northeast of mainland Sardinia and southeast of Corsica. It is simply breathtaking, with the shades of turqouise waters, smaller and some bigger sandy beaches, nooks and crannies all around these islands and just smell the salt water and feel the breeze. Having lived in the Caribbean; this is the closest I've seen to that, in the Mediterranean.

Lots of these beaches are only accessible by sea, and boat (rented or on a tour) is the way to go to make sure you really get what this place has to offer. The clearest of clear waters, wild and erratic rocks and formations, in all shades of sandy/terracotta/granite and the juniper bushes that thrive all around all of these rocky islands. If you're into underwater, bring your googles/snorkeling gear- as that's where the real show is on!

Had we stayed for longer than a week, we might have done yet another trip out and about the archipelago, just because there seems to be so many islands to see. Keep in mind that this is a national park, so please do what you can to help preserve it - no littering, and be respectful of both flora and fauna.

If you have time, do head in to La Maddalena town as well - it is rather pictoresque and quaint, and has a selection of restaurants and bars, as well as some shopping for those who'd rather do that than more swimming.

We decided to take the ferry to La Maddalena from Palau. It was 4 of us plus a car and paid about 64 euros roughly. It was not very busy on board so we had a relaxing ride over. The town centre is very nice and is worth strolling thru. We then decided to drive around the island. While it was interesting and relaxing, it was not exceptional in any way. We stopped at several beaches but nothing stood out about them. While it was a nice enough day out, it did not live up to the hype and I do not believe you will miss out by not going. Maybe taking a boat trip to the other islands would have been better. I do highly recommend a boat trip to the Golf of Orosei!

Decided to stay in Maddalena for 3 nights, on our way to Costa Smeralda. Great decision. Much better destination than the coast. Plus if you love visiting, cycling, hiking, secluded beaches, everything is there. I would recommend to not make the mistake of only visiting for the day. The village has a lot to offer, plenty of great places to just sit have a coffee, great restaurants. Plus staying ion Maddalena, gives you the chance to visit the city, the island, get on Caprera for hiking from fabulous coves to coves. We did not do the boat day tours, though no time. Maddalena was a highlight of our trip

though the weather was threatening rain, my wife, Maria, and I rented a Vespa and toured from La Madellena to Isola Caprera. What a treat! The road has little traffic and takes you to many surprising vistas. We stopped at the Mineral Museum and had a tremendous session with Maria, our guide. Because of the weather, we did not stop to explore the plentiful and enticing hiking trails, sadly. Afterwards, back on La Madellena, we had a great lunch at an Agritourismo that was soon closing down due to being late in the season. Well worth the trip!

We took our car to the island by ferry. It was 48euro for 2 people (price also depends on car size, we had a fiat panda). You don’t need to book a ferry ticket in advance (it was actually more expensive that way). We just turned up, they take your ID, and once you’re on the ferry, you buy your open-return ticket there, and collect your ID again.

When you come off the ferry, to the right of the entrance, you’ll see all the boat operators lined up. So if you want to book a trip, you can choose from a big variety. Again, no need to book in advance, but probably better if you do if you want a full-day boat trip as they seem to set off around 9:30-10am.

We chose to drive as we wanted to snorkel in our own time (brought cheap snorkels from Decathlon!). I advise you take drinks and snacks, as the best beaches have nothing, apart from sand and crystal clear waters.

We found Capera, to the right of the island, to be less interesting. Its more rugged, full of large bolders. The best beach there is a 30min walk to get to, and they recommend taking a guide, so we gave this as miss as we were only there for 1day. I loved the north west of the main island. Spiaggia delo stangeloto was my fave. Very uneven terrain to get there, but we did it in our Panda! Its a small secluded beach, great for snorkelling. But this whole area had beaches, just drive and you’ll discover somewhere.

We finished with dinner in the main town, lots of choices of bars and restaurants. And boarding the ferry was so straightforward.

Beautiful place. The best highlight of our trip!

La Maddalena is an island located in northern part of Sardinia in Italy. There are hotels in the town on the island that is not very heavily populated. The island is quite famous for its beautiful beaches and has a rocky terrain. There are several ancient ruins and some fortifications that are still left on the island.
