Despite being here two days, visiting the tourist info centre who advised on what to see/do, and checking websites (and the literature the info centre gave me) to understand opening times, pretty much everything in this crumbling town is closed - the love bank, the church, the castle etc, etc. I managed to get into the open air mining museum but the underground tour was delivered in Slovak and I was given an English script which was impossible to read as it was dark down there. All In all this place is not set up for tourists. It takes hours to get to and is not worth the schlepp. Stay in Bratislava - much nicer!

i really enjoyed visiting banska stiavnica and am surprised by previous review saying this place should lose its UNESCO status. parking was difficult here but everything was so beautiful to visit and walking around here was so enjoyable and relaxing. you only need a few hours here but it is very very much worth a visit if nearby.

I am the person who loves to just wander around to admire an inspiring architecture. Banská Štiavnica seemed perfect for this activity and I must to confess I simply felt in love with this town. Sadly because of shortage of time we spent only a couple of hours exploring its gorgeous streets. But it was all worth it. The weather was on our side with its lovely autumn breeze. Because we arrived late in the afternoon and it's the end of the september there was almost no tourist around. Empty old town to wander around? Sounds good to me. Alongside streets are located lovely little coffee shops and also a lot of beautifuly decorated boutiques or art shops to explore. I already wish to be back there.

Small but very charming town with many cafes and shops around. It is really a pleasure walking thru the town centre and maybe drink a coffee there.

Spent the day there. The place offers quite a lot , especially for English speaking people. Communication is much easier. There are lovely boutiques, not too pretentious. Many restaurants and cafes with indoor and outdoor spaces. Plenty of smaller museums and galleries. Able to really get a feel of mining. Proud historic places to visit. Many churches. A great brewery. Parking is very challenging!

We went there for a day trip. It was a nice surprise to us. The town is small, situated in a green valley. On the way we spotted "the Calvary" - pilgrim place (foundation stone in 1744) on the hill just before entering the town. We had a problem with car parking - all spaces in the centre were full so we needed to park the car down and walk a little bit steep road - maybe some bigger car park building should be considered but it would be quite tricky. The town is full of history - beautiful buildings, not working mines you can visit, churches, galleries, lots of small restaurants. We tried to enter each house courtyard which was open and we enjoyed every minute there. Luckily the weather was good so it was perfect trip. I understand Slovak so I could translate to my husband but most of the young people who served us in cafes spoken English.

Small area with nice bars and shops with good walking zones and proper signs for orientation. You can see a lot of beautiful historical buildings and mining equipment/minerals available. Great place to walk would be suburb part of old town with tiny streets on the hill.

Our group of 22 spent a day and a night here in late September. Our local guide told us that in its historical center, which is a conservation area, one can find up to 360 artistic and historical monuments, although I would hard pressed to tell you what they are beyond about a dozen. In 1993,the city and its surroundings were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Dominating the town center is the Old Castle. The majority of the monuments that we saw are concentrated into the area separated between Trojicne and Radnicne Squares. Both squares are separated from each other by the Gothic Church of St. Catherine and the Town Hall with its slender clock tower. Other sites include the Holy Trinity Plague Column, Knocking Tower, and Marina's House. With the exception of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, all other churches were closed.

This place is wonderful. Not just the old town, the whole area here is. But what you need to do first is figure out, how the parking works :) even police officers seemed to be confused.
