It has wonderful views and is very close to some great dolphin watching and snorkling spots. This beach is less crowded with tourists and so you don't get hassled about buying something every 2 minutes. But for me, the thing that sticks out about Matemwe are the locals. From the staff at our hotel to the people running the tours, everyone was wonderful. They take the time to make sure that you're enjoying your time and from my experience, go above and beyond. I booked a snorkling trip with a local down at the beach, Moshi, who took us out for a wonderful snorkling trip. On the way back, we just happened to be passing by a pod of dolphins, so Moshi told us to jump out and swim with them. It wasn't something we had planned, or really been interested in, but it was serendipitous and beautiful. On the way back to shore though, I stepped on a sea urchin, ouch! And had 3 spines stuck in my foot. Moshi proceeded to spend the next 2 or 3 hours with my, slowly taking the spines out of my foot with a combination of a few basic tools and some traditional remedies. I'm not going to lie, stepping on an urchin sucked, and the pain of extracting the spines sucked more, but I was very glad to have someone knowledgable and experienced helping me out with it. He made sure I was alright and even continued to text me for days to make sure my recovery was going well. In the end I was walking again within a few hours and back to normal within a few days. But the care, time and hospitality really stood out to me as particularly special. I'd recommend this place to anyone.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2023

Not only did he take us to see dolphins, but he also led us on a mesmerizing snorkeling adventure by Mnemba island. His knowledge of the area and the marine life was impressive, and he made sure we were safe and comfortable throughout the whole trip. Tip go early morning 6:30 am or 2:30 pm for less boats and people . We had him take us just outside Matemwe reef less fish but lots of great coral. Ahmed is more reasonably priced than most. We spent alot of time snorkeling just inside the beach reef at high tide. You should tow a marker for this.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten January 21, 2024

We were in Matemwe beach late June. On a walk down the beach I met many activity sellers. I would not call them guides. They sell everything from snorkeling to spice tours to moped on the beach rentals. We opted to go fishing with 6 of our group as negotiated a price of $150 for a half day trip. Food and drinks were to be provided and I was told that we would be fishing in back of the island. Chi Chi picked us up at our Airbnb at 5:30a and dropped us at the boat around 6:00a. I asked if there was fishing gear for all 6 of us and was told “yes”.
We started out before first light there was two rods that I could see and though the rest must be under the seats. After about 30 minutes of making our way to the cut and out the waves, we started beating to windier weather with short chop waves, trolling two rods It was at this point hat I asked the fisherman whee the rest of the gear was and when/where we would be fishing. He let me know that the trolling with the two rods was it. As for food and drink there was a 12 pack of water.
At this point I realized that we were misinformed and was really not worth having any of our group seasick and told the fisherman to just turnaround and take us back.
In short, fishing here is not what we were expecting. We were not provided with our own gear. I would say that a better description of this activity is an early morning boat ride with 2 fishermen.

This beach is on the east coast of Zanzibar so amazing sunrises. The beach is protect by a very large reef which at low tide is a great place to explore. There is alot of sea life and sea urchins so you do need reef protective shoes. You cannot swim at low tide but there is always pools of water to cool off in. The bay next to Matemwe Asilia is kept very clean and beach sellers do not bother you. The next bay in front of the Matemwe fish market and village is not very nice with the beach being used as a toilet and lots of rubbish

We had an incredible experience during our stay in Zanzibar, all thanks to Jaku, our amazing beach boy guide. Born and raised in Zanzibar, Jaku knows everything about the island and organized all of our excursions perfectly. We did five different tours with him:
Nungwi Sunset Cruise + Nungwi Turtles Aquarium
Stone Town + Prison Island
Safari Blue with Kwale Island
Jozani Forest & The Rock
Mnemba Island
Jaku arranged all the tours privately for us, ensuring everything ran smoothly. He was always punctual, extremely kind, and incredibly accommodating. His deep knowledge of Zanzibar’s history, culture, and nature made each tour unique and special.
If you're looking for a reliable and friendly guide who will help you discover the beauty of Zanzibar in a personal and relaxed way, we highly recommend Jaku. Every excursion was unforgettable, thanks to him! Here his phone number to contact him: +255 62 997 0020

A lovely stretch of stunning white sand and beautiful shades of green seas. Even at high tide the sand is at least 50 metres wide, at low tide slightly more. Yes, there is some seaweed, both in the sea and left on parts of the beach after tides but this is just part of the nature that shouldn't be changed, not even for hotels who want pristine white sand. It really is picture perfect and in our average walk, 2km one way then return, opposite direction in the afternoon we'd pass maybe 10 other tourists and of course beach sellers. The beach sellers, mostly Masai lads, are friendly selling sarongs, bracelets, sunglasses. A firm polite "no thanks" or "I already have" , which in our case was true having visited the large local market in Stonetown, is enough to discourage although often they just want to continue with a chat. Dhow trip sellers, snorkelling or taxi tours are also offered off the beach, not always as polite but these people aren't aggressive sellers either and are not troublesome.
A few locals have set up basic restaurants. We found the food at those good quality and cheap, with welcome cold beers at 5000tz and snacks such as chicken sandwich and chips 12000, fish or chicken curry with rice or chips 18 to 20000.

Very nice and quiet beach for relaxing, not too many people. There are quite a few good restaurants on it. spent 12 days of vacation there and were not disappointed.I have to mention our tour guide Ramso, who I absolutely recommend, he takes care of everything you need from a boat trip, transportation, a visit to a nearby school or village, tours... He is very friendly and professional and sticks to every agreement, also his prices are better than others. It also has a kite school that you can try, really perfect. I will give his whatsapp contact below, I highly recommend him, you will not be disappointed i promise.

The beach faces east - i.e you have the sunrise from the sea, however not the sun setting into the sea. We even saw the moon rise from the sea
It is more quiet than beaches with many huge resorts. A few beach boys and travel agents will pester you, however not too bad
It is only possible to swim here when the tide is up, which was okay when high tide was in morning & afternoon, not so nice when it was at midday & midnight.
You can walk to the reef at low tide (remember beach shoes)
It is a very long beach with the finest white sand, ideal for long walks in the morning or afternoon.

Wondering if seaweed and urchins make it difficult to swim at this beach? And how does the tide affect it?
Written May 18, 2018
You can hire a guide & special shoes at the hotel and walk out among the sea urchins to the reef. Swimming only when the tide is in I would say.

Hello everyone - it is great that you all had a wonderful trip. I am trying to figure how to cut down costs/expenses.
There seems to be a HUGE difference in price in using a taxi to get around the island versus a dala dala. There may also be a difference with travel time as I guess taxis are faster, but I am not sure how much faster. Any suggestions?
My base is in Stone Town, but I plan to travel one day to Matemwe/Nungwi and then one day to Paje/Jambiani.
Any advice - I am all ears!
Written December 31, 2017
1 trip from Stone Town to Matemwe can cost up to 45 USD (the usual rule is 1 USD per km). 1 full day with your own rented car costs 30-35 USD depending on the season.
I rented my 4WD from Kibabu cars and it was one of the best decisions taken in the Zanzibar trip.

Hi everyone! I have a question. I really enjoy swimming in the ocean. I was deciding whether to do a few days in Nungwi and a few in Matemwe in August and am wondering about the tides. Is it possible to swim or is it too shallow? Also, I want to go to Paje too. Thanks!
Written July 1, 2017
Where we stayed in Matemwa you cannot swim. There are literally thousands of sea urchins everywhere. You can't go in the water without water shoes.
