notre dame de ganagobie is a masterpiece. anyone visiting the region should make it an imperative to see this church. the entry door is magnificent. romanesque carvings surround the wooden door, which in itself is beautiful. but the true treasure are the mosaic floors inside....More

You can only visit the church (as many reviewers have said). It's a nice example of an abbey church but not exceptional. The doorway is interesting and the mosaic floor in front of the altar is worth seeing (I presume this has been extensively renovated).You...More

The windy road is attractive, going up and down. Goning down it shows the view lots of times in many different angles. The site of cloister and church itself is amazing, even if you cannot go inside as we did, arriving at 1900 (church and...More

The drive up is an experience and worth the trip to see the vista once you've made it to the top. The Ganagobie monestary is so gorgeous and peaceful. Most of it is off limits but people do go on retreat here and I imagine...More

Extensive trails allow you to explore the plateau. Make sure you visit the Abbaye's gift shop. Local products fill the shelves. It's a great excursion.

Nice. Worth a small detour, but not a trip. Very little is available to the tourist - you must be on a retreat to see most of the site. Gift shop is great, though.

Ganagobie monastery We visited this monastery early in the morning (10am). It was a very steep switchback drive up to the Monastery but in Provence, if you want to visit a touristic site, they are usually perched on a mountain side somewhere up near the...More

If you are driving in the Durance valley (A-51 motorway), take a break and visit the ancient medieval monastery of Ganagobie - north of Sisteron on the West side of the river. A short drive up from the local road leads into a still-active Benedictine...More

It is not possible to visit the whole monastery: only church is open to the public, giving access to the twelfth Century mosaics; the cloister can be seen through glass protected windows. It is also possible to visit the surrounding plateau, notable for the view...More
