The Sant'Agata Basilica is located in the heart of Gallipoli old town which is on a small island. It is the largest building there packed in tiny streets around, so it's difficult to capture the whole beautiful Baroque facade. The interiors are stunning - pretty dark as a result of lacking sunlight with similarly dark huge paintings on its walls. Terrific marble art work as well. Free entry.

Walking along the town centre we found by accident the cathedral open because was S.Francis day so we had a look inside. Nice inside, lovely frescoes. Big and interesting structure.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Agatha's history follows that of Catania and is dedicated to its patron Saint. Legend states that Quintianus, the governor of her district in Rome, wanted to marry Agatha, and he was determined to force her to break her vow as a nun. She refused and he cut off her breasts. To honor her memory and tragic set of circumstances, local bakeries serve up a half-ball molded cake (shaped like a breast) filled with custard cream, covered with flavored fondant with a cherry on top. The Cathedral, itself, is quite beautiful and is well worth a visit.
