- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia19,450 contributionsInside and outside beautyThe Sant'Agata Basilica is located in the heart of Gallipoli old town which is on a small island. It is the largest building there packed in tiny streets around, so it's difficult to capture the whole beautiful Baroque facade. The interiors are stunning - pretty dark as a result of lacking sunlight with similarly dark huge paintings on its walls. Terrific marble art work as well. Free entry.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 8, 2023

- Marvin GOgdensburg, New York1,493 contributionsPatrion Saint of this Cathedral never broke her vow as a nun.The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Agatha's history follows that of Catania and is dedicated to its patron Saint. Legend states that Quintianus, the governor of her district in Rome, wanted to marry Agatha, and he was determined to force her to break her vow as a nun. She refused and he cut off her breasts. To honor her memory and tragic set of circumstances, local bakeries serve up a half-ball molded cake (shaped like a breast) filled with custard cream, covered with flavored fondant with a cherry on top. The Cathedral, itself, is quite beautiful and is well worth a visit.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 23, 2024

The cathedral is the most important monument in the old town of Gallipoli. It was built in 17th century. The exuberant stone facade is a good example of the Lecce Baroque style while inside the huge oil paintings and the decoration creates a truly harmonic ensemble. Particularly interesting are the last two side altars of the aisles before the transept, the left one with a good altarpiece by Gian Domenico Catalano and the right one which is carved of white stone with symbols of the death. It's worth to take a look inside sacristy if it is open because from there you can take a closer look at the wooden stalls of the choir through a small door.

Definitely one of the churches worth seeing in Gallipolli old city !
There are 26 or 27 churches in the old town so do keep time to have a peek in all which are open !

Baroque cathedral of Sant'Agata in Gallipoli dates back to 17th century. It has a richly decorated facade in limestone, with statues of saints. The interior is on the Latin cross plan. Many altars, including a polychrome high altar. Magnificent example of Italian baroque art but not in style of famous Lecce churches - Gallipoli cathedral is much more sublime.

Beautiful cathedral is lavishly decorated with paintings by Giovanni Coppola, Nicola Malinconico, Giovanni Catalano. The apse and ceiling are frescoed. The nave and altars are inlayed with marble and granite. Taking a picture of the façade is tough though as there's no plaza in front of the cathedral.

It doesn't look much from the outside but the inside is very impressive. From what I could understand of the (Italian) descriptions of the amazing 17th century paintings, the decoration was in an "anti-baroque" traditional style when I guess just about everyone else was going down the baroque route! The paintings pretty much fill all of the available space, including the ceilings, and the stone work is quite heavy and traditional as well, but really well worth visiting. A couple of nice little cafes for a coffee outside in the square next to one of the walls.

This church is a must see when visiting Gallipoli. It is filled with beautiful artwork on virtually every wall, including a moving portrait of Saint Agatha immediately before her martyrdom.

A truly awesome Cathedral built in the center of old town Gallipoli. It was a blessed experience to see such a wonderful structure and the workmanship applied to build a magnificent church.

What are the hours that the church is open?
Written April 24, 2018
Like most others in Italy mornings are the most reliable times to visit. Evening opening tends to be not so regular. But normally open 7:30 to 13:00 then again later to 9:30 ish. But things can change with special ‘days’.
