It was a pleasure to visit one of the few surviving old stave churches of Norway. The staff in the visitors center were very helpful and allowed us to go into the church even though it was almost closing time. This stave church is 1000 years old and so well preserved. The wooden carvings are amazing. Definitely worth a visit... More

The medieval stave churches are a wonder of Norway. Very few survive and it is moving to see these wooden cousins to the Githuc churches of Europe. Also wonderful hikes available that start at the church.

On a recent trip to the Scandinavian countries we were blessed in getting to see several of these unique churches. At one time they were found all through Scandinavia but now most of them are in Norway. . The name derives from the buildings' structure of post and lintel construction, a type of timber framing where the load-bearing posts hold... More

The trip to this location was awesome! The church is a fantastic visit. From far away it looks totally black and as you approach it you see a change in color and an amazingly preserved site. So glad we stopped here!

Look for the runic inscriptions inside the door, each side, from the man who helped with the building. They are fortunately covered with glass to protect but you can still get a good photo. The visitor centre is... More

Beautiful church well preserved. Peaceful place to visit and admire the wood designs of the original church. A simple place with a lot of history.
