About
The Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre is a structure dedicated to the promotion of the natural heritage of the Caldeira Velha´s area, classified as a Natural Monument. The building has, among other aspects, the main purpose of promoting the particular environmental values, allowing the visitor to discover in loco the particularities of this point of interest and acting as a complementary space of informal education. At the same time, it offers a wide network of resources and promotes a touristic component. It is also possible to enjoy four thermal pools at the Natural Monument. Concentrated in a space surrounded by the natural landscape, the building is noteworthy for being an “object stamped on the landscape”, which adapts to the existing vegetation and rocks, granting it an organic image, consistent with the space.

    Wonderful place for relaxation
Caldeira velha is a beautiful place with two thermal pools surrounded by forests. There is also a top pool where is a cold water waterfall. However, they are not that big so they can be crowded. Due to high attendance, we bought tickets online a few days in advance. Don't forget to bring a towel and slippers. There is free parking.

    Worth a visit
This is a less polished way to experience hot pools. Beware, admission happens only in 1.5 hour blocks so time your arrival appropriately. Because each wave of people is admitted at once, the changing rooms are congested for 15 minutes. There is another set right at the top which are worth heading for. The toilets are totally inadequate. There is a cool pool (too cool!) with a waterfall at the top, and then a series of pools with slightly varying temperatures.

    Pleasant Geothermal Pool Experience
We had the first booking of the day - bookings are in 90 minute increments. Being the first to the area, the pools were not busy. There are 3 hot pools of varying temps and then a cold pool and waterfall up top. It is a bit rustic - changing rooms are free, but a locker is a small cost. Definitely bring towels and water shoes or slippers. Overall, a pleasant geothermal pool experience!

Try to make reservations for first entry. The place gets very busy, when we left, two full tourist buses were arriving. The area is not meant to hold so many people. Bring a towel. There are changing rooms and bathrooms. Lockers are available. If you want a locker (they are small) you pass the changing area on your left, walk up the hill to the little building (bathrooms are behind this building), there is a desk where you can pay a small fee for a lock, you then walk back to the changing area and the lockers are located behind the changing area. When you are ready to leave you must go back to return the lock. I would not come here if it is a busy time. It truly can get uncomfortably crowded.

    Wonderful Experience
We visited the hot springs from 15.00 to 16.30 today and had a wonderful experience. The site wasn’t too busy and the slot after ours looked quieter again. We followed all of the tips from the previous posters and these made our visit more enjoyable. We changed into our swim suits in advance, wore swim shoes and arrived at the check in desk 15 minutes early. We stood under the waterfall of the top pool and relaxed in the heat of the lower pool. We were chilled out for the remainder of the day and topped it off with a lovely meal in Ribeira Grande afterwards. Highly recommend a visit to the springs.

Only go there for the view.
To get to this place, you need to hike, they do not let you drive to the entrance. And to be honest, it seems that there is 30% more people than it should be. The pools are not so clean, a lot of hair in the water, also some dirt. It really seems you’re swimming in sweat. Also, you need to wait to get a changing room. Only recommend to go there, if you want to enjoy the view of a waterfall and nature.

This place is extremely crowded and do not have enough changing rooms and bathrooms to accommodate all the people they let in. The lockers are a joke and will barely hold one backpack and not worth renting for 2 euros. You are only allowed 1.5 hrs and the pools are just warm. The top pool where the small waterfall is cold. If you must come here bring water shoes, towel, and wear your swimsuit. You are better off going to Terra Nostra in Furnas for a truly unique experience.

Beautiful path ways and pools and water falls, there are changing areas and bath rooms near the pools. It was a small fee of $3 to enter and $8 to swim.
The water here was bubbling and had a sign warning of Temps.

We were initially bummed that we would only have 1 hour out of a 1.5 hour time slot due to the shuttle fiasco to Lagoa do Fogo. However, one hour is plenty of time to visit all 3 pools. Note - the waterfall (small) pool is not thermal. The middle pool is the warmest of the three. All pools are on the small side which is probably why 100 people are admitted at a time and on a timed schedule (colored wrist bands). It was still a bit crowded at 15:30. The surroundings are beautiful. A small kiosk is outside the park for snacks and beverages.

As OAPs we paid an admission fee of 1 euro and we all agreed that it was the best value for money ever. This is paradise on earth. Absolutely magnificent. I could have stayed there all day but unfortunately we had to move on . We spent a week on the island and consider this place THE highlight among many other beautiful places.

We arrived to swim but we’re told you had to book days in advance so decided to go in just to the gardens. We have done a lot of hiking while we’re here so perhaps we’ve been spoilt but I’m not sure what the fee was for. It was busy with all the people swimming but there really isn’t much of a reason to go in if you aren’t swimming.

There yes a small exhibit on geology but compared to the centre at fumas it was minimal and I wouldn’t bother if you aren’t swimming

An undoubtedly beautiful place with lush grounds. A very Jurassic feel. However, a lot of people are let in during each time slot so if you are claustrophobic like me it might make you uncomfortable. There are 2 thermal pools and a 3rd with a waterfall that is less warm. I was surprised that the waterfall pool was less crowded but when I felt the water I understood why. That being said, my husband and I really enjoyed the waterfall pool as there was space to move around without touching other people’s bodies (it’s also a very cool experience.) The grounds are kept very tidy and very well maintained. No garbage to be seen and changing rooms/showers/toilets were clean. I would recommend the experience to new travelers who have never been. Purchase tickets in advance.

Beautiful place but very crowded. Our tour guides didn't know that access to the thermal pools must be pre booked and spaces fill up soon. We enjoyed the place but would be nice to have less people in the pool in one go and better facilities to change clothes, etc.
