This is exactly as it looks. Interesting to see. Don't miss the pina colada being sold there. One of the best in Cuba!

Classic tale where the journey is better than the destination.

The mural de la prehistorica was commissioned by Fidel Castro in 1961 and that’s probably why it is famous. The actual artwork is laughable - it kind of looks like something done in art school. However, most local tour operators use it as a endpoint for organised tours via horseback and the road into it is quite beautiful, passing closely to mogotes.

We personally hiked it to it using instructions found online. We passed through some amazing scenery.

They actually try to charge you money to view it but it is easily viewable from the fence adjacent to the gate, which is what we did.

The mural itself is pretty indifferent, so I think it’s important to hedge expectations - but you can’t really come to Viñales and not see. It’s quite cool as a brief amusement; above all, however, the area surrounding the mural - whether you’re visiting by bike, horse or on foot - is stunning, and so if you throw a visit to the mural into a wider tour of the valley then you definitely won’t feel short changed.

It was interesting to see the Mural de la Prehistoria. If in the area it is worth a stop, but I wouldn't go far out of my way or call it a "must see".

well, if this are historic paintings... if about 20 years is considered to be old or rather "historic", so let it be.

The Mural de la Prehistoria is located at 4 km from Vinales, in the Sierra de Viñales. It was painted on the natural wall of the mogote Pita.
We were impressed by this huge 120m fresco, with required 4 years and a team of 18 people to make it.
We found that this fresco is amazing. It represents the geological and biological evolution of the Vinales valley, with a very rich fauna, including in particular dinosaurs, giant marine reptiles, snails, Indians.

If you're in the area anyway (as we were) then pop along and see it and take a photo and tick it off your list. Don't make a special journey out to view it as it is just basically a painted rock. The site has a fairly large shop and a nice bar area for a refreshment but you wouldn't spend too long here.

Well.... I'm not sure seeing this made me a better person. From a distance it looks quite horrible, primitive. However ... you must appreciate the size of it, and the fact that it took 18 people 4 years to paint this 120 meter wide mural, while hanging in ropes and harnesses off the top of the cliff. If you get close to the wall you can see that it's actually painted in lines - which makes it somewhat more artistical.

This probably sounded like a good idea to some bureaucrat sitting in a Havana office but the reality is bad. Terrible mar on beautiful scenery, It is gaudy and juvenile. The only positives are the grounds are quite nice and the bar makes a great drink

A nice bar but the prehistoric painting is from 1959 and of cavemen and dinosaurs. Only 3 CUC to enter but not much to see. Take aquí lol selfie and you’re done.
