THE WAITOMO GLOWWORM CAVES World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves' historical and geological significance. Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history. THE BOAT RIDE Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way. RUAKURI CAVE Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, and marvel at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to the glowworms. ARUANUI CAVE Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place that is steeped in Maori myth and legend. Just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations.

The site was on our way from Hamilton to New Plymouth, so we have decided to take a quick stop. The caves are not that much special, but the glowworm experience is.

After shelling out $100 for the two of us we were dragged through the caves in a group of 30+ with people that wouldn't be quiet. This made it hard to hear the brief commentary from the guide. The tour was capped off with waiting in the dark for 10 minutes for a boat ride with children that wouldn't shut... More

Drove about 2 hours on Friday from Rotorua as part of tour package. Guided tour thru the caves lasted about 45 minutes; the group was fairly big at 10AM. No photo allowed in the cave, which is a bummer. The glowworms were interesting and somewhat beautiful like the starry sky. It was a long drive for a 45 minute tour,... More

This famous cave is stunning. We visit on a cold rainy day, but the inside cave is breathtaking. The guide took us on a boat rowing to show glowworms hanging down from the ceiling. Taking pics aren't allowed, but enjoyed enough.

Callled in on our way down from Auckland to Rotorua, well worth the detour. The glow worm caves are a sight to see, would recommend this trip and it does not take long.

400,000 visitors a year means that you are in and out in 45 mins. Very busy with coach loads en route to Rotorua or Auckland. We were on the first tour of the day so got to see it in relative tranquility. No photos allowed. Good shop and cafe and restaurant. Disappointed that couldn't even buy a USB stick with... More

Hi Rob, thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're glad you got to experience the tranquility of the glow worm caves with us! The reason we do not allow photos being taken inside of the Glowworm Cave is to respect the request from the traditional owners, and to maintain the health of the glowworms so everyone... More
