About
World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves have been guided since 1889 and occupy a high place in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. Stare in wonder at the thousands of illuminating glowworms above as you glide silently by boat through the glowworm grotto. Many of our current guides are descendants of the Maori chief who originally explored the cave and can share with you the remarkable history of the area. Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way.

Outstanding Guided Tour
Sep. 2021
George our guide made this trip for us. The cave was spectacular and the glowworms were great to see. It was the stories and knowledge, we felt privileged to be hearing all told with humour and passion that made this stand out, an experience we will never forget. Thank you, George, You have left us with joy in our hearts. We loved meeting you and appreciate how you put everything into the storytelling. We learned so much.

Glad We Did This!

We were staying in the area and decided to pop in for a visit. The caves were amazing and our guide Rich was fantastic; he sang to us in the cathedral part of the cave to demonstrate the acoustics - so talented. The glow worms were brilliant - don't miss this but please ask for Rich to be your guide.

What a tourist attraction
Jul. 2021
It was amazing to see the development of this place. I haven't been for
40+ years. I was greeted with a brilliant visitor centre with lots of information, and a passionate guide who explained things to us. There are now steps, tiles, hand rails and lights. The boat ride was silent giving us a good opportunity to gaze at the glow worms. When I watched the Christmas carols in the cathedral cave, recently, I was reminded of how lucky we are to be able to visit these incredible places. Thank you to the ticketing person, who let us go through on an earlier tour, and for the passionate guide, keen to be a kaitiaki of these glow worm caves. You are appreciated.

My partner and I did this as total beginners. Absolutely awesome from start to finish. Smooth running, great kit, excellent guides. Magical glow worms! Warm showers at the end very appreciated too. Thanks!

Glowworms get a 5 but the tour a 2
We did the tour on February 29th. Our group wasn't huge, maybe 20 of us. The cave was interesting and the glowworms fascinating, however the tour itself was disappointing.

Our guide was a Maori gentleman and he was more focused on the need to be quiet rather than guiding. He talked so quietly it was hard to hear a lot of what he said. There was a family in our group with two children (approx 4 and 6 yrs old), and the guide constantly shhh'd them, even though they were very well behaved and not loud at all. If they even whispered to their parents during his talk he would shhh them. We felt so badly for the parents. The shhhing became so distracting we could hardly wait for the end; literally every third of fourth word he said was "shhhh" during his talk, even when no one was making a sound. The guide with the group behind us was not nearly as quiet and we heard more of her talk than our own! And the group ahead of us sang at the one point and it echoed through the entire cave. But he still wanted us to be silent. If any amount of sound disturbs the glowworms that much, then tours probably shouldn't be done at all. Period.

The boat ride was lovely, the glowworms beautiful but he had very sternly warned us that there could be absolutely no sound at all during the ride. We were almost afraid to breathe. When he pulled up to let us out, another man helped us out of the boat and the guide turned the boat around and left. Not one word said to let us know the tour was over. We all sort of looked at each other and said "I guess that's it". Perhaps another guide would have made our experience much better, but as it was I would go elsewhere to see glowworms.

I am really glad that this stop was along the way of our travels. I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Absolutely fantastic

Such a great tour!
This guided tour is split between walking through the cave system and cruising around the underground river staring in wonder at the glowworms.
Our guide Wii was engaging, informative and outright hilarious and made the tour really enjoyable.
A really great tour for all ages and very child friendly, highly recommended!

A very enjoyable tour
This tour was great. Our guide knew so much about the history of the caves and how they were discovered. She also knew a lot about stalactites, stalagmites and glow worms and their life cycle and was easily able to pass this on to our group. Our guide was terrific, and the tour is great. I would recommend.

Absolutely fantastic!!
Aug. 2020
We visited these caves in December 2018 while on our honeymoon. The tour guide, Mr Devito (I think that was his name - it was a famous actor's name anyway!) , was absolutely brilliant. Can't praise him highly enough. Our flight was delayed and we just missed the last tour but he managed to get us in. Talk about customer service!! He was also informative and funny. The caves themselves were stunning. Seeing all the glowworms lit up was truly magical - a once in a lifetime experience. The boat trip was a great way to end the tour. Hope to visit again one day. Highly recommend and nothing negative to say. Our only regret is not writing this review sooner!
