The final stop on our day long tour is the Fortress looking out over Lovech. We had a guide talking us through the layout of the fortress as it is mainly ruins so this gave us a better understanding and of its history.

There's a lovely little dog that seems to make the fortress his home so keep an eye out for him. The mix of the interesting ruins and the views out over Lovech and the surrounding countryside make this well worth visiting and a great place to end our tour.

The Hisriya Fortress is located close to central Lovech, on a hill on the Eastern side of the river Osam. Because of its elevation, this has been a strategically attractive location and therefore, has seen many layers of buildings over the past 3-4 millennia. It is likely that the original construction was a Roman fortress, and was improved and expanded by the Byzantines and later, by the Bulgarians themselves. The Lovech Peach Treaty ended the war of independence of Bulgaria against the Byzantine Empire, and was, therefore, the beginning of the Second Empire. The reasonably well-preserved (or restored) fortress has been the site of ongoing archaeological excavations and coins, utensils, tools, pottery, jewels and other accessories to daily living have been recovered. These objects are largely housed in the Lovech Historical Museum, which is also well worth a visit. The ruins of several churches were found inside or around the fortress. their identity and age are still being debated. While the fortress is of interest, the view from the site, because of its elevation, is beautiful and certainly justifies climbing up the hill. The site is open to visitors all year around, although the hours vary by the time of the year. Guides are available from the Lovech Regional History Museum, preferably by prior agreement. The site could improve with explanatory panels and guidance for self-tours.

The fortress is on a hill above Lovech. You can see there: walls of churches, houses inside. It is a lovely place with stunning views over Lovech and mountains, not so many informative boards but we liked it.

This fort has remains going back to Romans and even before but the majority of what you see is from the 12th century.
The site is very ruinous to the extent that you cannot understand what is what. Plus the lack of information and explanations make it frustrating.
The views are lovely from the top but it does not take long to thoroughly visit it.
Be aware that it closes a few hours at lunchtime.

Spreading the hill over the city, the Fortress does not impress as much with architecture as its history.
The complex is well maintained, there are newly built spaces and a mini-theater in the open air, where various chamber concerts are organized.
You can walk freely anywhere, if you do it in summer take your hat.
Do not miss to see the water museum in the foothills, there is a combined ticket for both sites.

If you want to visit the Hisarya Fortress, go by foot from the city center. It takes you only 5-10min.,but it is worth, because you can see typical historical houses, you can also visit the etnographical museum and local church on your way to the top. The fortress is a lovely place with great views. There are many ruins, not so many information boards, but it is worth a short visit. Entrance fee: 4 BGN/adult, family ticket: 6 BGN.

Stopped off in Lovech on drive from Sofia to Veliko Tărnovo. Spent pleasant 30 minutes walking around the ruins. Pleasant walk up to it, too
