Our family hung around here for a sunset after we were worried about making it back from Skaros Rock. It is an underrated spot on the island for sunsets so it was not too crowded when we went. A photographer was in the area taking a picture for a lady with a long dress and explained it is his favourite spot on the island because it sits 350 m high which is one of the highest west coast spots to see the sunset on the island.

The Chapel was closed when we went but we were able to do a quick hike to Skaros Rock from here. If you're planning to go to Skaros Rock make sure you have good shoes. The path to the chapel would need good shoes for some and has limited accessibility so plan accordingly.

St John the Beheaded is one of several churches on the Fira-Oia Walking Trail.
A small, white-washed church, it sits on a lonely, isolated position on Skaros Rock.
To reach it, you have to leave the main Fira-Oia walking trail and take the steep path down to Skaros Rock. It’s a very steep walk downhill to the little church but the path is stepped and there’s a handrail in parts. I didn't find it slippery or dangerous.
The church wasn’t open when we were there (I suspect that it's mostly closed) but it has a small, paved terrace with a lovely view so it’s a nice spot to pause briefly before continuing on to explore Skaros Rock.
It is worth noting that the Skaros Rock diversion adds another hour onto the Fira-Oia walking trail (it’s surprisingly further than it looks).

Skaros rock is a must see in Imerovigli and on the way down the dirt road you will come across this beautiful chapel.
It is also the first resting place when you walk back up from the rock.
You can ask yourself what is this doing here, but then you have to question the whole of Greece 🇬🇷.
Fun in any case, especially in that rugged lava environment.
Wonderful Greek holiday feeling!

The chapel is located near the Fira - Oia hiking trail, just off the path leading to the Skaros Rock headland. It is a small white building with a semi-circular vault, on the side of which there is a bell tower with one bell. There are white crosses both at the top of the bell tower and on the roof, which make it easy to locate the chapel because it is located in a somewhat secluded place. Next to the chapel there is a characteristic mosaic-shaped white and beige square and a stepped path leading to the headland of Skaros Rock. To reach the chapel, you need to leave the Fira - Oia trail along a steep path down towards the Skaros Rock headland. A signpost along the trail informs about the path.
