Skaros was considered the most important of Santorini's five castle fortresses. The rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress constructed there offered protection from pirates.

Skaros rock was directly in front of our hotel (Hotel Sunny Villas) so we were easily able to get to this location. I can't say the hike was easy as anyone who has been to Santorini knows that there are a lot of stairs and...More

We stayed in the Astra suites and the Skaros Rock is located right in front of the hotel. We decided to wake up early and do the hike( about 2 hours for the total hike). We were glad that we did the hike, once you...More

We added this detour onto a hike from Fira to Oia. It was well worth while. You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness and be steady on your feet as there are lots of steps and slopes to get there. Once in...More

A very easy climb until you get to the top. It gets a bit harder but well worth the visit and the view from the top is stunning.

Incredible little hike in Imerovigli. If you're driving to Imerovigli I think the best place to park is at Buddha Beach Bar which isn't far from the hiking path to Skaros. The church on the far side of the rock was honestly one of the...More

Me and my husband did this walk together on our first day in Santorini. It's not a long walk and you get great views. Don't be put off by the short climb at the top. It looks tricky to get down but believe me if...More

Did a morning hike to the rock, staying near Fira. It's A bit challenging with the climb up bit nice views. It's a morning stair master workout. I did it while my teenager slept in. You can go all the way round the rock.

A must if you can. A hard walk but stunning views when you get to the top. Need stout shoes and go early morning or late evening not in the heat of the day.

Yes, you can get to the church without scaling to the top of the rock. It's actually near the bottom on the far side of the rock. The path is relatively easy to find, then you'll chose to go down or up. Going down is how to... More
We hiked the beautiful Skaros rock trail the other day and we found several pottery fragments of terra cotta and some green glazed ceramic pieces up in the ruins. Has anyone else found similar pieces? Does anyone know the origin and/or approximate age of such pieces? From my research, I reckon they could have been from the 17th century when the last settlement left after an earthquake. Any further thoughts? Thanks, Suzanne

As this is a well traveled trail, it is highly unlikely that you have found anything that is really old. Most likely it is fragments of something purchased in a local souvenir shop on the island. To be sure, you could take... More
