Skaros was considered the most important of Santorini's five castle fortresses. The rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress constructed there offered protection from pirates.

We climbed up the rock in the morning when it was not so hot. Be sure to wear sneakers or closed shoes if you plan on reaching the very top. There is climbing involved at the top. Once there, you'll see beautiful views! Definitely worth...More

Very rustic and pretty. Need confidence if you’re going to climb to the top! It’s almost vertical. Very pretty and seen some old archways almost buried. Don’t do in the heat of the day, there is no shelter

We wanted to see the sunset in a nice and quiet place and as soon as we saw Skaros rock, we did not hesitate to go there. You can find a pathway but getting all the way to the top is tricky, so I would...More

We visited it while doing our hike from Fira to Oia and it was well worth it! Especially as you find a small church at the back that offers great views! We went around 9-10am and there were not many people, just a few couples,...More

They're called cairns. "Cairns are used as trail markers in many parts of the world, in uplands, on moorland, on mountaintops, near waterways and on sea cliffs, as well as in barren deserts and tundra." 😉
