One off my bucket list!
Sep. 2019
I am an amateur enthusiast of all things early medieval, and there are such wonderful treasures here from the first millennium owned by the Lombard Queen Theodelinde that I have been wishing to visit for years. I have now fulfilled that wish, by making a considerable detour into Italy from Germany. I can’t praise these treasures too highly, and the fact that one can get right up close to examine them. Her chapel, containing the famous Iron Crown, can only be visited in a guided tour, bookable in advance. I managed to attend an English one.

A beautiful Chapel and museum with plenty of incredibly historical artefacts
Feb. 2018 • Friends
The Cathedral's museum starts with a mandatory guided tour of the Chapel of Theodelinda. (better if booked in advance). The Chapel built at the end of the 14th century is completely frescoed with a series of beautiful stories regarding the Longobard Queen Theodelinda. These frescoes date to mid 15th century by lombard artist brothers Zavattari and depict the queen's marriage, meeting with her first husband Authari, the latter's death in battle and her new marriage with Agilulf. The extreme beauty and vivid colors of the frescoes, in particular the gold still found on the queen's vests and warriors' armors make it extremely famous and important. However, what is even more beautiful and important, is the incredible Iron Crown of Lombardy; both a reliquary and one of the oldest royal insignia of Christendom. It was made probably around the 8th or 9th centuries and consists of a circlet of gold believed to be fitted around a central iron band, which according to legend was beaten out of a nail of the True Cross. It had been used to crown kings in Italy since the medieval times up until its last coronation with Napoleon. It was just marvelous to look at and definitely just worth the whole trip there. It was unfortunate however that no photographs, not of the crown nor of the frescoes, were permitted. After this wonderful visit, we went downstairs to visit the museum containing the main relics and artifacts that used to be on display inside the cathedral. I was even more amazed here because so many beautiful and important historical artifacts were displayed. Among others were the crown of Theodelinda from the 6th century, Stilicho's Diptych (ivory tablet) from the 5th century, Agilulf's cross from the 7th century and Berengar's one from the 10th etc. Another interesting thing inside the museum was the dress the Alabardieri of the Duomo wore: a ceremonial armed guard, similar to the Papal swiss guard, that served the Cathedral of Monza (a rare privilige).

Very Very good CITY. If you go there you must absolutely visit the “Duomo” and the museum. Rich of history and very interesting. The “Corona Ferrea” is one of the most thing you MUST see. Maxbugatti.

Well worth visiting

Monza is a hidden gem as Milan is usually the choice of tourists. However one of the things to see in Monza is surely the Duomo with the iron crown of Queen Teolinda built between the XIV and XV11 centuries. It is Gothic and the painted scenes of Queen teolinda in the Chapel is worth seeing.

Amazing collection of early Christian artefacts
Jul. 2016 • Family
The museum has a large collection of artefacts dating back to early mediaeval times. Some of the artefacts are linked to Teodolinda, the queen of the Longobards who later married the duke of Milan who made Monza his capital. The chapel she inherited, dedicated to St John the Baptist, became the Duomo.
There are lot of reliquaries and also some bags made out of palms which are said to have been made by the apostles..
Fascinating insight into the development of Christianity in the region.

A treasure from the Middel Ages
May 2016 • Friends
The treasure of Monza Cathedral is amazing. It is one of the most important of this kind in Europe. The musuem have an excellent collection of late antique and early medieval works of various kinds.

It is also the house of the Theodelinda's treasure: the crown and cross of Theodelinda, the Hen with chicks and many others artifacts dated to Longobard time.

This museum is a must to see!!!
