About
The big draw for many visitors is Skye, just a short 30 minute crossing from the mainland and yet a whole other world away once there. But don't let that overshadow the many charms of Raasay and the Small Isles too.

With the Covid restrictions and as foot passengers with a hire car on Skye we decided not to risk simply turning up as we would have done and booked tickets in advance. My wife went into the booking office and simply was asked for her name and handed the pre printed tickets. The ferry was clean and well sign posted. The journey only lasted just over 30 minutes and being a nice day we spent the entire journey outside taking in the scenery. Disembarking could not have been easier. A great experience.

Had three trips as part of a tour. Ullapool to Stornoway, Tarbert to Uig and Armadale to Mallaig. Three very different boat based on route but all more than adequate for the journeys and all three ran to time. The Armadale to Mallaig boat is a little scruffy but given the crossing length its not a big issue,

Yes Caledonian Macbrayne are having alot of technical issues and our ferry from Uig to Tarbert was cancelled today. We didn't see the txt but the staff bent over backwards to get us on the ferry to Lochmaddy and held the ferry across the Sound of Harris for 15 mins so we (and 3 others also at the wrong terminal) could make it to our accommodation on Harris today. They were incredibly calm and polite and did everything they could and more given the circumstances. We are so grateful and really appreciate their professionalism in what must be very difficult work conditions for them.

We have had a sailing booked from Mallaig to Lochboisdale for the last six months. We were informed with four days notice that our crossing was being cancelled and that the company would be in touch with us to arrange a new crossing from Uig to Lochmaddy. Nothing was heard so we tried to ring the company, a recorded message said that they weren't taking calls. How poor is that? As soon as they have a job to do to help the hundreds of customers they are letting down they walk away!
Cal Mac have the total monopoly of Scottish routes it seems so they just feel they can mess people around when they choose. Luckily my wife had read some other similar posts about cancelled crossings and someone had provided a free phone number which we tried, after around an hour we managed to get through and to change our crossing so that we were'nt too badly affected, it was lucky that we did as we got one of the last slots.
What an awful company.

Looked at the weather forecast (beautiful and sunny) and decided a day trip to Eigg (one of the small isles) was the order of the day. Quickly checked in to collect our tickets and the ferry. Crossing was as smooth as silk and able to observe a few dolphins on our way to Eigg which is only just over an hour from Mallaig. Able to sit out on deck but plenty of seats inside if the weather is not as kind to you as it was for us. There is a cafe on board should you require snacks or slightly more substantial meals. After leaving Eigg the ferry the calls at Rhum and Canna before returning via Rhum and Eigg before arriving back at Mallaig. You get 4 hours on Eigg where you can hire bikes or Kayaks to explore the island. Well worth doing. We have used Calmac before when we visited Lewes - Harris and the Uists. Have not had a bad experience yet.

We took the Cal Mac ferry between Mallaig and Armadale, Isle of Skye on a day trip in late July. Glad to say that the sea was very calm as not everyone is a good sailor. We decided to arrive early for our morning ferry across to Skye and we were delighted to be invited to board the earlier ferry which had not yet departed. Brilliant service, and all with a smile too. The journey, for car and passengers, went well.
Our return journey in the evening was, as per our morning experience, on time and ok.
Great ferry and not expensive.

I booked the ticket to have a scenic crossing to Skye. When I drove on board I was told I had to stay in my car. The view was the back end of a pair of campervans. Rubbish. Go the long way around!!

Friendly staff at Mallaig and onboard the ferry to Eigg. Beautiful conditions and saw lots of wildlife including dolphins. Food was nicely prepared and enjoyed and the 4 hours on Eigg flew by. Booking as foot passengers was simple and the staff very friendly.

Speedy boarding, pleasant journey. Shame you cannot leave the car for the views. Not sure if this is because of COVID times or normal practice.
