It is so hard to find information on this place …it appears to only happen on the weekend.there is a Facebook page for mariveles 5 fingers …absolutely useless they did not respond and it was like pulling teeth to get information from them . Eventually my friend contacted them .we organised to do the inlet hopping on the 28th May .we arrived on the 27th ,there was a typhon developing over the other side of Luzon (Betty) no boats going out because??? The weather was blue sky at mariveles for both days a bit of a breeze but I had worse at Subic bay ?? So we ended up not doing it .there really is nothing else here as I had already done the Bataan death March .the Facebook page mentioned never got back to us . The hotel we stayed at also could not help . As Macarthur once said I will return …well I will not

Unforgettable experience! I got a day pass ticket from Salzburg and made transfers from Bad Iscl to Obertraun. I wasn’t dressed for the Ice Cave so I only went to Five Fingers. It is accessible by strollers and wheel chairs. Great for all ages. It is lovely to eat a snack while sitting admiring the marvelous view. Restrooms and a restaurant are available. A small chapel is also there. I suggest that you go to the Five Fingers first before heading to observation deck since it is the furthest. Some packs (hard) of snow was present for children to play with during the first week of July. I was there for a great 3 hours marvelling at the view. Just remember to put your backpack on the floor because it gets crowded in the cable car and to keep your ticket to descend the mountain.

INCREDIBLE! Don't let the hike out deter you from going. It is difficult for people with mobility issues but there are places to sit and take a break on the way if necessary. Inclines but even pavement all the way. It is expensive but we felt it was well worth it.

We were mislead into thinking that the walk to viewing "fingers" is just walk, but it was quite a trek.

Let me leave notes about an access from Salzburg for a day trip and some other notes about the mountains and Hallstatt rather than my personal comments as you already know it's amazing! *google map provides timetable of trains and a bus between obertraun(nearest train station to 5 fingers) and 5 fingers. all the info is as of July 2017.
From Salzburg:
1. Take 150 Bus from Salzburg main bus terminal to Bad Ischl(bus terminal and train station in same) *You can ask the route and timetable at OBB desk in Salzburg train station.
2. Take a train from Bad Isch to Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen
3. Take 543 bus from the church behind Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen(train station) to Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn Talstation(5 fingers)
Bus tickets are available from drivers and it was quite easy!
Not may trains and busses so just check the timetables back to Salzburg and Bad Isch.
*Google map provides train timetable and bus timetable between Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen(train statioin) and Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn Talstation(5 fingers) And, 150 bus timetable is available on the bus.
On the way back with 150 bus from Bad Isch to Salzburg , don't even try to get off until Salzburg though there are several stops which attracts you but my bus got really full on the way and the driver had to give up several stops...! I guess some people had to wait another one or two hours for the next one because of this.
5 fingers to Hallstatt
If you want to visit Hallstatt too, try to finish 5 fingers and other attractions in the mountains according to your travel schedule back to Salzburg and take 543 bus to Hallstatt. I only chose the ice cave and took a bus to Hallstatt at 1300-1400(You can stay more if it is weekday. it was Sunday so less options/at this point there were already only two options for 150 bus from Bad Isch to Salzburg). The bus goes to the Obertraun train station first and then to Hallstatt.
If you just want to see the lake, just 30mins walk is enough in Hallstatt and it was very convenient because the ferry from Hallstatt is scheduled to train departure. Make sure to check the latest timetable of ferry in advance.
Dachstein Salzkammergut(5 fingers)
There is a ticket office right after you get off the bus. Several options but if you spend the full day, all inclusive ticket would be the one. You need to join a guided tour for the ice cave and Mammut cave, and you can apply for them in a counter after the 1st cable car. The ice cave took me around 50mins and the operator told me both will take 3 hours(so I only took the ice cave). For the ice cave, it is recommended to wear a warm jacket and pants. I was with my shorts and it was a bit chilly for a 40-50mins walk inside the cave.
5 fingers
You need to walk 20-25mins after the 2nd cable car. All the views are amazing! There is another cable car after this stop but I personally think it was not necessary. People go there for hiking. 2nd stop and 5 fingers hold much better views.

We were based on Salzburg and drove over to Halstatt in the morning, then went to 5 Fingers lookout in the afternoon. We had planned on 1/2 day at the area, although once we arrived it was obviously one could spend an entire day exploring Mammoth Cave, the Ice Caves, and the Panorama view at 5 Fingers if you had the time. The tickets were easy to understand, essentially based on which of the 3 you wanted to visit, and how many (and how old) in your party.
The 2 cable car rides up were fun and crammed, but had beautiful views and everyone (although packed together) was in good spirits. Once you depart at the upper station, you can basically walk to the Shark (large shark, look it up, we didn't go there), walk to Welterbespirale (en route to 5 Fingers, interesting, takes 5 minutes, points out the direction of notable global points of interest as well as a free photo op to download), and 5 Fingers. We enjoyed the walk to 5 Fingers which took approximately 25 minutes each way. Views of Halstatter See were beautiful, as well as the surrounding snow capped peaks in October. The 5 Fingers viewing platform is just that...5 small protrusions over a 400m fall, each protrusion offering something slightly different (picture frame, glass floor, etc). Overall an amazing experience and in hindsight worth the price. When in Austria you will at some point have to decide which when you compare which cable car/chair lift/funicular you are going to summit for a great view. All of them are relatively expensive and this being the most expensive, was also the most impressive. I would encourage visitors to Halstatt to break away from the city on a clear day to take in the views (and enjoy the cable car rides up!)

I was staying in Bad Ischl, and whilst it would have been easier for me to catch a train from BI to Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen Bahnhof, walk 4 minutes, then a 543 bus to Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn Talstation (the cable car base station), I chose to get the train to Hallstatt, ferry across to town, walk through the town, and then the 543 bus (mini-bus at times) to the base station from Hallstatt Lahn. I just love Hallstatt! If you go this way, remember to look-up towards 5 Fingers, since you'll be doing the reverse soon.
Anyway, having arrived at the base station, it wasn't immediately apparent as to how I got to 5 Fingers, since the cable car routes were colour-coded, and the colours initially made no sense to me. However, everything was understood after a chat with the lady at the ticket counter. Since I had no interest in the caves, I bought a ticket that entitled me to 3 cable car return trips (Panorama Ticket).
This is how it works. You catch the first cable car (green) and disembark at a level where you can access the caves (Ice and Mammoth). If like me, your interest is only the 'summit', you then catch the 2nd cable car (blue) to a restaurant (and striking view of a distant glacier). From here, you can hike for around 30min to 5 Fingers (you might see a few paragliders take-off en-route), but you can also take the orange cable car to what would initially appear to be a remote station, but - as I pleasantly found, having taken it - I was only 10 minutes away from a lovely hut, great for lunch.
You'll have to go some to beat the view of Hallstatt Lake, and Hallstatt from 5 Fingers on a sunny day, and all-told it was a great experience. If you're using public transport, just make sure that you check out connection times using the great OBB app so that you're not left stranded.
I suppose the only negative thing about the whole experience was that some of the cable car operators seemed a little bored with their job which didn't really embellish the rather special mountain-top adventure.

We stayed in Hallstatt 2 days and visited the Dachstein Five Fingers platform on the second day. We had an amazing day and would really recommend this visit if you are staying a couple of days in Hallstatt or even a full day as you would have time to enjoy Dachstein in the morning and walk around Hallstatt in the afternoon/evening.
We got the 543 bus to Obertraun Dachstein from the Lahn (opposite the supermarket). You can purchase your ticket on the bus and the prices were €1.80 one way or €3.60 return (ask for a Tageskarte). The bus drops you off on the Dachstein Visitor Center (Krippemsteinbahn Taistation) and it leaves from there as well to go back to Hallstatt. The ticket office for the cable car is a few meters away from the bus stop and it is very easy to find your way around. I would recommend to take notice of the bus timetable to and from Hallstatt as they are not very frequent and it will help you manage your time on top of the mountain.
At the top of the first section is the Schönbergalm Lodge which is the jump off point for the cave tours, the second section takes you to the 5 Fingers Lookout and the Shark and the third section takes you to the Gjaidalm Lodge which offers great hiking. We only wanted to visit the Five Fingers Platform and Shark so we got the Panorama Ticket to the second level only. One tip: if you are staying at a hotel in Hallstatt you would have received a guest card (as part of your receipt) whith 2 discount stubs (one for the Hallstatt salt mines and another for Dachstein). You can get a small discount (€2) per person if you hand that at the cable car ticket office.
The views from the top of the mountain are breathtaking and glorious. Once you exit the cable car turn right to get to the Five Ways Platform and the Welterbespirale Lookout Point. The way is easy to walk and the views are fascinating. There are nice reclining chairs by the Welterbespirale which are ideal to stop and relax or eat your lunch.
The Dachstein Shark is one of the new attractions on top of the mountain. To get to it you turn left from the Lodge (the opposite way to the 5 Fingers) and follow the steep descend. The wooden signal by the Lodge said it should take 30 minutes to get there but it took us 45 as the way is quite steep in places, narrow in others and we had to walk over snow at least twice. Don’t let this put you off, it is really worth it!! The path to the Shark is not the easiest of treks if you are an unexperienced hiker but if you take your time it is definitely manageable. The views on the way to the Shark are amazing and the Shark itself is really cool. It stands out from the rocks and you can climb inside for really nice views of the mountains. I would really recommend a visit to the Shark.

While we loved the Dachstein-Salzkammergut experience (30 EUR panorama ticket including 3 cable cars, Welterbespirale, Dachstein Shark, 5 Fingers), the 5 Fingers platform itself is just OK. The view from the Krippenstein mountain station is fantastic even without the viewing platforms. It was also very crowded at the platforms. You get the same view and fewer people by doing the Heilbron Circular Trail - hike from Krippenstein mountain station to Heilbronner Cross then to Gjaid valley station and take the 3rd cable car back to Krippenstein. 5 stars for the views; 3 stars for the touristy viewing platforms.

The Austrian mountains are spectacular in every season but if you decide to visit 5Fingers on a winter's day, make sure you do so with the right clothing and shoes. At 2100 m altitude there's a high chance of snow from September until April, and temperatures below zero.
We went there today and couldn't believe how many people went up there with only sneakers and light jackets, at -7°C and half a meter of snow. The 25min walk to the 5 fingers platform is outright dangerous without the right kind of gear. In winter that means thermo jackets and padded boots, better even snow shoes (which you ccn rent at the cablecar base station). You should also stay on the marked tracks (no matter how pretty the view from some other point seems to be) and never ever throw snowballs from the top of the mountain as you might cause an avalanche. We saw some kids rolling big snow balls off the edge of the path today - that's clearly a big NO.
Other than these words of advice, 5 Fingers and the entire Krippenstein area are amazing and will give you some of the most beautiful views you can get in Austria. I would even recommend making it a full-day trip combined with Hallstatt instead of going to Bad Ischl and/or Wolfgangsee as many people like to do. I would rather soak up that wonderful mountain feeling and not stress myself to see more places on the same day.

Hi all,
I have 2 questions.
1. For the ice cave, can i make the purchase online for may? Went to the website but it seems they don't allow for tickets purchase for the ice cave, much less for may tickets.
2. Is it a must to get cable car tickets for 5fingers? If say i would like to hike up to 5fingers, is it difficult for a beginner hiker like me? How long would the hike be? Planning to do the hike in May.

You can buy tickets at the base station of the cable car. They have different pricing depending on whether you want to go all the way to 5Fingers or just to the middle station where the caves are. You can also buy one-way tickets if you would want to hike down instead of ride (but it's pretty steep).

There is a cashier desk at the entrance for individual entrances. Only groups buy in advance with reservation time. 60 people can enter the cable car at one time so you buy the ticket and stand in line. The waiting time isn't long, if you don't get in the first the next one is in 15 min.
