One can do a bike round trip of the lake at around 10-15 km / hour, easily in less than 2 hours, seeing a variety of insects, birds and plants

This cycle way stretches some way, from Riedenberg in the south further north following the Altmuehl river. And it’s stunning. It has amazing scenery, an archaeological park and medieval towns like Dietfurt and Baeilingries as well as some beautiful churches in tiny villages off the track of the cycle path. St Vitus in Kottingworth has an amazing Romanesque painted baptistery for example, and the abbey and Plankstetten abbey among other things to see.

I lived in it for a number of years in Rebdorf, near Eichstatt, where a monastery was founded in the early Middle Ages and is now a Middle School. There are caves in cliffs rising over the valley where people have lived since Neanderthal times. The last time I was there was four years ago. It is very beautiful to drive around and filled with very friendly B&B's and small hotels.

We traveled for approx. 33 miles along this river and through the national park. The scenery is amazing. Great to relax and watch the miles go by. Plenty of small towns and of course churches. Some wildlife on the canal and because it is summer holidays here, campers. Plenty of mobile homes and caravans. Did not see a lot of fishing or swimming. Just people sitting in their deck chairs relaxing. Nice.

Stopped at this lake for two nights while travelling from france to the Czech Republic and it was a pleasant surprise to find such facilities in a rural area. I stopped at a campervan stop beside Altmuhlsee Lake and it had all the facilities required ie food outlets, toilets showers and shops. The lake itself is a resort for boating, kite boarding etc with boating trips around it. There are also a number of small beaches, and the lake seems safe for swimming etc. The town of Gunzenhausen is nearby and it has numerous shops, cafe's, bars and a semi permanent fun fair.

Great cycle paths, well signposted, easy to find your way. Tours around the Altmühlsee; Grosser Brombachsee and Igelsbachsee with good places to stop for refreshments

We rode 250 km on e-bikes with friends from Gunzenhausen to Regensburg for 8 days. The roads for bicycles were in excellent condition: mostly tarred or smooth gravel. The area is very beautiful and varied, the places where we stayed overnight were all very interesting and beautiful.
