About
Marta Herford sets standards. With its innovative and future-oriented approach it is a place where knowledge, thinking and creativity are combined with sheer joie de vivre. This is where questions about the present meet the ideas of tomorrow. Marta Herford is an internationally oriented museum for contemporary art with a special focus on architecture and interior design. Exhibition and education are at the centre of our engagement with art. At the same time we feel bound by the classical functions of a museum: collecting, preserving and researching. In all of this our focus remains on contemporary trends and developments, and is always inquisitive, open and experimental.

What an amazing place in a surprising locale! A Frank Gehry-designed museum with cutting edge shows, fantastic. Unfortunately, the cafe has been closed for some time. As with so many places in Germany, it has become neigh impossible to find staff. Otherwise, fantastic, it is worth a trip!

The architecture of the museum is what attracted us. Unfortunately, when we visited, there was only one exhibition and new exhibitions were in preparation. The one exhibition was not to our taste. However, a stay in Herford and visit to MARTa and its café Kupferbar is worth it.

Thank you so much for your kind valuation. We are sorry you have had only the opportunity to see one exhibition. Hopefully you will come back to see the other one :-) Kind regards from Marta Herford!

When in Herford, this is the place to visit. Great architecture, always good exhibitions and close to the train station, just a 5min foot walk.

It seems that somebody asked Gehry to add his name to this museum in order to assure attention. The building is worth talking about, but because he did it, not necessarily because there is anything else going on inside it. And nothing going on inside has or even needs to have anything to do with the architecture. It's the main reason for the museum. If you're anywhere near, go and see it. It's better than others he's done the same thing for. But don't go out of your way to get there. Other things in the area are at least as impressive or exceptionable.

Dear Ms. F., we felt very sorry about your notion that our exhibitions haven't anything to do with the architecture, because every exhibition in the Gehry-galleries is influenced by the architecture. Right now we've opened a new exhibition, where eight artists created a brand new view on the architecture: http://marta-herford.de/index.php/bizarre-spaces/?lang=en. Best wishes, Tabea Mernberger

Strangely compelling place in provincial German town. The building is beautiful. Every time we have been a new and very compelling art exhibition. All beautifully set out. Beware if you are visiting soon - renovation of cafe running late and there is nowhere nearby especially on Sunday to decamp to!

The building really starts on the street, with text on the ground and a shiny metal sphere on the roundabout, which make it easy to find by car or by train (5 min walk from the main station, left). The building itself curves and shines - best photographed from the multi-storey car park across the way. Inside it is bright and spacious. Usually 2 exibitions at the same time, not necessily related. Exhibitions are mostly modern art- get a guided tour/use app if possible, otherwise you can be easily be miffed as to what it is all about, although there are usually info sheets hanging on the walls. Lockers available for your bits and bobs, entrance at 8 euros normal for the area. If art doesn't take your fancy the cafe will - limited but good menu with a terrace and comfy seats , next to a lively brook. Brunch on Sunday is well worth it, but you should reserve! Very nice place to spend a few hours.

The first thing you notice is the Gehry building - it's very out of place in the Bahnhof/Kleinbahnhof neighborhood. We went to see the Kunst/Soundmaschine exhibit recently, and it was fascinating. As a previous reviewer said, there are no permanent exhibits, but the temporary ones are always very interesting. It's inexpensive (7€ for adults, 4€ for students) and a great way to spend an afternoon.

Having recently moved to Herford, we visited this museum. We had heard great things about it and were looking forward to visiting. We visited on a Sunday with our 2 children (aged 4 and 7). The outside of the actual building is quite pretty but the museum is very small. We were there for about 30 minutes. There were no permanent exhibits. There were two temporary exhibits, one was of recycled products which was very imaginative and the children (and adults) quite enjoyed. The 2nd exhibit was definitely not for children. I'm used to thought provoking images and have travelled and visited quite a few museums but this exhibit should have had a warning. Among the pieces, there was a framed picture of butterflies and blood filled syringes. Also, a television playing a video of a person getting some sort of plastic surgery done, quite live for a 4 year old to see.
A little warning would have been appreciated because of the nature of the disturbing content.

The most interesting part about this building is the architecture. Very elegant and at the same time playful and serene. From the outside as well from the inside it contains a lot of nice surprises and gives you something to explore and to be amazed.

They do offer exhibitions on various topics so better make sure it is something of interest for you in there but if it iis, it is surely worth the 7 € entrance fee. Parking space is ample close by and the railway station is just 500 m aways.

For those of you who are interested in modern art and architecture certainly a must see.
