Very nice visit to the only still standing castle in middle Rhine
Jun. 2021
Great guided visit to the Castle, the only one that was not destroyed by wars in the region. We had an almost private guided tour, as there are very few visitors at the moment, making it quite special- and in English. The history of the place is overall that of many casltes in Europe, with the architectural and social evolutions over centuries.

Nice views onto the Rhine; cute shop; the old book shop at the entrance has some impressively old pieces, worth a look!

The only castle on the Rhine still in its Medieval condition
Jul. 2020
We visited in time for the 1pm English tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Take a cab up the mountain from the boat dock and enjoy the scenery. Inside, the castle is still in remarkably good shape and is decorated as it was in Medieval times. You can see a bedroom, kitchen, and chapel, as well as a garden with a spectacular view of the Rhine.

Impressive Hill Top Castle with Proud History
Sep. 2019
Marksburg Castle near Koblenz area of Rhine River is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with proud history of being the only castle along Rhine River that has never been destroyed. We visited the castle during our Viking Cruise’ “Rhine Getaway” shore excursion. We boarded our ship’s shore excursion tour bus at the dock, and were driven through a town before the uphill ride toward the castle. At the parking lot, we walked up to the castle gate. At the castle entrance, our tour guide showed us the key to the castle gate which looked like a magnified version of an old style room key. After walking up stone steps for a while, the guide opened the door to the castle building with the key. Then, we were led to the inside of the castle. There, we had to walk through a tunnel like rocky path with courts of arms hung on the wall. The rocky path was very uneven and slippery. We then entered a courtyard with a series of guns trained toward the river. We could appreciate the strategic value of the castle, because the gun bank area had a commanding view of the river. The guns would have devastating effect on the invading forces from the river. Our tour continued through a garden area with breathtaking views of Rhine. We then entered the armor room and the toture chamber of the castle. The armor collections were interesting, but toture devices were scary. After walking through the slippery and uneven rocky path again, we returned to the bus parking lot. The castle was really worth visiting.

A castle that has been alive
Aug. 2020
A great view from the B42 if you approach Braubach: the castle on top of the hill, shimmering white. No one ever dared to attack, it is too steep. The castle has been alive since the late Middle Ages. There is a parking area near the castle, but the road there is dangerous. You can also park down in the village for free and take a footpath up. The guided tours are okay but a bit focused on the 'original' medieval aspects, like foltering which has probably never been done here. Since the castle has been inhabited during difficult ages, everything there is original also from a later date. The room with the different costumes looks like a fashion show, it is great but the puppets look too tall......Also the garden with herbs, some of them poisonous, along the 'zwinger' is very remarkable with a great view over the Rhine.

The Castle of Castles on the Rhein!
Oct. 2019
Marksburg Castle is amazing for its comprehensive intact rooms, artifacts, furnishings, views unmatched, and on and on! The guides are knowledgeable and very personable. The attraction is NOT for those who have difficultly with walking or strenuous activity. The paths through the castle in areas are rough and steep. For those that are generally fit, it is more than well worth it. Outstanding gift and schnapps shop as well as a restaurant with a view.

A Magnificent Castle
Jul. 2019
Truly one of the grandest medieval castles in Europe with the most magnificent views over the Rhine Valley. Recommend the taking of a guided tours in either German or English. Well worth the small added cost. It is however quite strenuous.

We arrived on foot with our luggage for which the castle is certainly not set up. We caught a taxi from close to the wharf and after to the railway station. There is no designated location at the castle to leave luggage. We were not the only tourists in that situation so we all left our luggage behind a large wooden door in the hope that it would be there on our return. Thankfully it was. All other visitors would have come by car.

A Magnificent Castle/Fortress
Nov. 2019
The castle is one of several eye-catching castles in the Rhine Middle Valley. The tour was part of our Viking Rhine Getaway offshore excursion and a tour guide is required to have access to this well-preserved medieval castle. We were informed that the castle was used more as a fortress instead of a residence. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Climbing up the steep hill may be a challenge to some but it is worth it. The museum displays of medieval items were impressive - the strategic canons, the kitchen/dining area, the bedrooms, the weapons gallery and warriors garb, and the torture room or the dungeon. A toilet built protruding from the wall is an interesting medieval concept. The view of the town below and the Rhine River is amazing from the vantage point of the castle.

Medieval at it's best

Marksburg Castle was my most anticipated stop and it didn't disappoint. Medieval kitchen and gardens, bedrooms, weapons gallery and torture chamber. It was awesome!

Outstanding visit. All the rooms and displays are fantastic.
Nov. 2019
A tour of the castle is a must do. All of the displays in the various rooms are very well done and present period castle life. Make sure you observe everything outside and inside as well as looking out over the river and town below. My favorites were the weapons room, the room with the mannequins dressed in various period warrior garb and with their weapons, and the dungeon/torture room. The gift shop is small, but has quality items.

Marksburg Castle
Oct. 2019 • Couples
This castle is beautiful and well worth the visit. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable. The castle is furnished and they do an excellent job of taking you back to the time when it was occupied. There is a very steep hill to climb, might be difficult for some. But, you can take your time, the tour is worth it. There is a lovely place for a snack with a gorgeous view. Clean restrooms & quaint gift shop. Reasonably priced.
