Loved Praia da Vitoria and the entire island of Terceira. We have had a wonderful experience. From praia to Angra, dined barracuda at Poeto Matheus, immersed in Porto Martin and Porto Judeu, Biscoitos, Palo Alto. I miss Terceira. We will come back

The old town of Praia da Vitoria doesn't look like it. Probably, the reason for the earthquake that destroyed it and restored the houses as new. Attractions are few: the Church of Mercy (Igreja do Misericórdia), the Church of the Mother (Igreja de Santa Cruz), the town hall. The city is very clean, decorated with flowers and care of the residents.

Praia da Vitoria is the second most important town on Terceira island after Angra do Heroismo. And this ranking is also seen from its old center.
It is justified because the city was founded shortly after the first arrival of the Portuguese in Terceira, in the fifteenth century, and never lost importance, despite the two severe earthquakes that had half-buried it, in 1614 and in 1841. Ruins have been repaired, and still today it is rich in remarkable palaces, recalling - on a smaller scale - those of Angra do Heroism.
The straight "Rua do Jesus" street, which crosses much of the old city, offers a beautiful perspective, exalted by being pedestrian zone; which makes particularly enjoyable a walk through it.

It’s not Angra but it is a nice small town with picturesque houses and many steep streets (just keep that in mind)

Loved walking the cobbled streets through old town. Lots of little shops and good food all within walking distance.

Vitoria Old Town has patterned cobbled streets, a good selection of churches and historical buildings, stores, restaurants and a beautiful harbor.
If we weren't in love with Portugal before we certainly were now.

We visited the old town on a recent cruise call to Praia da Vitoria. There were some lovely shops in this area, and very pretty buildings. All of the roads and pavements are black and white with differening patterns in each street

Walkable area with lots of shops and cafes without any hustle and bustle. I walked the marina and visited a small gift shop that had a nice variety of souvenirs from clothing and cork accessories to liquers.. In the summer one can go to the beach there where they have brought in sand to soften the rocky shoreline. There is a tiny ice skating rink in winter where local kids ice skate. It's worth visiting just for the walking and enough shop staff speak English that it's easy to shop.

Praia da Vitoria is just a 5 minute drive from the airport.
It offers a taste of Europe with charming shops, romance of cobblestone streets, colorful churches and peaceful city squares which is larger than the one in Angra and feels a bit more like some of the larger squares I have enjoyed in Europe.
Also, there is a large sandy beach with a walkway all along the sea front, it is perfect for strolling along the water.

the most memorable building is the 16th century town hall, a superb survivor of the 1980 quake in a nice plaza surrounded by cobbled streets

Hi! Can you walk from the cruise port into town?
Written February 22, 2020
Yes you can walk and walk. The streets are cobbled little stones with some missing or raised so sensible shoes no heels and look ahead not lost in conversation. Walking bring an umbrella as it is surrounded by water and weather changes quickly.
Plenty of pedestrian crossings and cars required to stop for you very safe.
Route is hilly down towards town and up on return but very pleasant and small grocery stores along the way for snacks and cheap alcohol.

Are shops/stores open in Praia da Vitória on Sundays?
Written June 29, 2018
I am not sure but maybe if you are arriving by cruise ship the shops may open. We were there on a Monday so what shops there are were open.. It's a very quiet place and Sunday's are still religious days on the island.
