We went to this boutique museum on September 27, 2023. As soon as we enter the magnificent entrance hall, we can see beautiful embossed copper works as well as some interpretive panels recounting the journey of the artisan Albert Gilles and of the next generation of female family members.

We started by visiting the exhibition “Copper, an art mine”. In a setting resembling a mine, we follow a short route to the magnificent objects of art that come from all over the world. The exhibition is free.

Spun copper technique

Afterwards, we went to the big store. A young man kindly welcomed us and gave us a demonstration of the art of repoussing. The technique consists of making a trace from a drawing on a sheet of copper. For the 2nd step, it involves pushing certain parts onto the back of the copper sheet using fine tools in order to give relief. To create these works of art, it takes a lot of patience and attention to detail. The parts are then varnished to prevent oxidation. Several other techniques have been added over time to create unique pieces.

After the embossed copper demonstration, we went to see the 2nd free exhibition "Le Christorama". This masterpiece by the artisan Albert Gilles tells the story of the life of Christ in 50 paintings. The silver embossed works took the master craftsman around fifteen years to complete since he devoted a few hours to them in his free time. Even if you are not Catholic or practicing, it is worth going to see this unique masterpiece.

The shop

Our surprise was to see so many artistic and everyday objects made from copper and different techniques used. You will see jewelry, crests, souvenirs, decorative plates, candlesticks, mirrors and small paintings. There are pieces for all budgets.

Art studio

Small embossed copper workshops are offered to all visitors aged 8 and over, $. The base price for a workshop is very reasonable.

Our tour company sent us here after we visited the Basilica just a couple miles away. It’s a family run business for over 100 years. The founder actually did some of the art work in the Basilica, so that made the connection. The founder’s daughter gave us a very short but informative demonstration after our group leader told her we were on a tight deadline. Personally, we could have skipped this attraction. However, the daughter was very nice despite the time crunch. In addition to the demonstration the place is filled with copper artwork and jewerly for sale. In addition, the location had an exhibit showcasing the original copper panels that were put at the Basilica and a strange exhibit covering the history of copper, its origins, and other related facts of interest.

It is different, but if you ever visited the copper museum in Clarksburg, AZ, this would be a disappointment. It’s a nice place to visit if you need to kill some time. But, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

This museum/store is an excellent stop on a day trip from Quebec. The legacy of the orginal artisan has been presereved by his children who know operate this store. We have visited twice and both times bought beautiful items, the first of which is over 13 years old and looks like the day we bought it. Definately worth a short visit.

This visit was included as part of a trip to a nearby basilica and waterfall. I didn't expect much but I was fascinated by the history and artistry. As other reviewers noted, there is a sales pitch but if you're not in the mood to buy, there's a lot of artwork to see. I've told others about it since I've been here.

Very nice experience: here is a nice little museum (with exhibitions including the famous Christorama) and a charming shop. Without forgetting the workshop and the kindness of the hostesses. The place is located in Château-Richer along boul. Ste-Anne - easy to access.

Very cool place that was part of our day trip out to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. Opened by Albert Gilles and run by his wife and daughter. Lots of examples of families talent with copper. Wonderful display of his story of the life of Christ was quite impressive.

What a nice surprise stop on our tour of attractions outside of Quebec City. Cuivres D' Art has the most amazing copper artwork and pieces I have ever seen. Albert Gilles, the founder was born in Paris and mastered the art of sheet metal embossing. He has done work for many churches across North America. He has left a beautiful legacy for his daughters and family to continue his work with copper. There is a museum and a short tour about the place and Albert Gilles. It is so interesting how they make the copper pieces and the amount of time and patience it takes. There are many pieces for sale at very reasonable prices. I never expected to see so much copper artwork in one place.

This is a lovely workshop, shop, museum and family hang-out all rolled into one. It was part of our Quebec City and Countryside tour and we feared it was going to be one of these hard-sell places where you feel bad if you don't buy something, but not in the slightest.

It's all family-run and the late owner's wife and daughters were all there. Another lady showed us round and demonstrated how the copper items are made and we had a wander round all the exhibits on show. Absolutely fascinating!

I did indeed decide to buy something as a memento of this visit - a lovely hand-made on the premises copper bangle which only cost £24 which I felt was very reasonable.

We thoroughly enjoyed this part of our trip and would recommend it to other visitors to Quecec.

Visited the museum while on a Canadian tour. Albert Gilles was an amazing artist. His family has continued the gift of working with copper.
