Great scenery. You are best to allow plenty of time so that you can enjoy the amazing views. Take turns in driving so you and passengers can take it all in. 2/3rds approx through from Taumaranui end you'll come across the Whanga pub hotel. Stop for the history and lunch : well worth it. The last saddle shows off Mt... More

Lovely drive through North Island back-country. However, this is a deceptively long trip along a winding road. Road sealed all the way. Allow a full day if you are wanting to also take in the Mount Damper Falls walk (an easy 1km or 30 minutes walk each way). I would recommend the falls and a stop at quaint Whangamomona.

Despite the rain, this really was a scenic drive. Heritage boards along the way tell the history. Definitely worth the drive. The road is windy and in parts not sealed so just enjoy the scenery.

Drove two thirds of this route before diverting to Damper Falls. Great route, not to be missed. Surprising scenery through ridges and valleys of farmland with ascents and descents over several cols. Self proclaimed republic on the way with welcoming pub/hotel. We need to return to finish the route.

Very scenic drive, little windy drive but not hard. Stop at the pub for a rest and stop at the look outs along the road. SAT Nav time estimates are pretty close to actual time.

This was such a great trip! We stayed two nights on it, in the middle of nowhere. Take your time, there is no need to rush. Make the most of the simplicity of the country. Such beautiful sights. Call into Tangarakau - The Ghost Town. A beautiful retreat where you just get to relax.

Start early as the low sun makes for some great photos along this picturesque, or should I say pasturesque road. Through the hills and dales you'll find areas that look recently washed out. There will be some roadworks that get in the way, but minor at best. The scenery changes a lot. Plenty of places to pull out for your... More

An incredible drive, the Forgotten Highway is similar to NZ roads everywhere else except generally narrower and not so well maintained! Several saddles to go over with awesome views, but in addition to the usual ups, downs, twisty, turny ride there were numerous other challenges. 1) rockfalls on the road, 2) mudslides and debris on the road, 3) half the road...
