Great place to hike and relax. We were there in the fall and the mountains are wonderful. Water ski on the lake.

Wish we had given this town a miss and just carried on to queenstown. Food in New Zealand is already expensive but this town was ridiculous. Restaurants were all pretty much the same and you'd be hard pressed to find lunch for under $25-30. Waterfront is boring and underdeveloped (see photo) There are lots of lakefront towns in New Zealand... More

Great spot to stop on one's way from, say, ChCh or Akaroa to, say, Queenstown. Suggest getting there via Geraldine/Fairlie road. Very nice "shared" lodgings at Mapleview Cottage, in a quiet part of town, which made breakfast and dinner "easy" given how busy the days were. Utterly spectacular sunsets from the balcony/deck. This is a good place to stop if... More

On day time, can enjoy beautiful lake surrounded by massive mountains. During night time, this place is the international dark sky preserved area, where we can enjoy hundreds to thousands stars by naked eyes without lighting pollution. Stars could not captured by normal digital camera, would be better to bring professional one.

This was one of the first stops of my 'Contiki' tour and I was speechless. It might be because i'm from a small town in West Wales and have never seen anything like it before, but I was in awe. The views were incredible and although packed with tourists, you didn't feel as though anyone else was there (you could... More

It was on our path coming from mt Cook and going to Christchurch. We walked the mt John Summit Track to check out the lake. It was a nice walk with good views on the lake from the top, but it was not in our top experiences of NZ. But you must stop here of course when you pass it.

A popular tourist spot for photos the Church of the Good Shepherd can be busy with tour buses which makes photos a challenge. However, when its quiet it is stunning. The history of the church is a great story and the setting with Lake Tekapo behind it is visually stunning. Make sure to see Lake Pukaki too while you are... More

Lake Tekapo is very cold, but extremely refreshing if you decide to go for a quick plunge! The Lake itself is beautiful and an amazing view if you drive up to Mount John Observatory, have a coffee and just sit and enjoy the scenery.
