Welcome to Parthenay
May 2019 • Couples
We stayed overnight a few minutes walk away for the Porte Saint Jacques so we sauntered over several times, evening, night, and with the morning light. It was impressive how far away you could get from it and still not see anything less than 300 years old in your field of view. It was neat to see the stone marker on the far side of the bridge that lets the pilgrim know that he only has 1700 kilometers to go to Santiago de Compostela! Well worth prolonged contemplation.

The best looking part of Parthenay.

Parthenay is a pleasant fortified town which, although it doesn’t have any “wow” factor, is a nice enough place to stroll around. There are various historic parts of the town to explore and Pont et Porte Saint Jacques is definitely the most interesting and photogenic of the sights, especially see from outside the town looking in, as it were.

We were visiting old town and managed to have a quick look at this. Worth climbing to the top to see the view over the whole town.

Walked around here this morning, absolutely lovely. Not only was the weather amazing but it was just such a week looked after and clean place. Would definitely recommend.

This is the main old gateway into Parthenay. You can climb the tower and then go and explore the ancient walls and castle area. It is all free.It is well worth spending time looking around this medieval area.

Lovely views, lovely town.

Parthenay is an ancient town on the site of a Gaulish village, then Gallo-Romaine fort, then became Parthenay. Very historic place (do some research). The tower is open (free) and the views are cool. The walk into Parthenay town from the tower is a great experience.

Medieval walk
Sep. 2016
This is not a stand alone visit..its part of a walk around the medieval bit of a little town. The bridge and gateway to the city have a 'milestone'...well, a kilometer stone really, for the Route St Jaques de Compostella...the pilgrim route to Santiago. My advice is to do the circuit, explore the little lanes and find the wee park between the old streets. Its lovely. Then go to Aut Fouee for lunch!

A lovely historic
Sep. 2016 • Friends
We visited Parthenay back in 2004, 2008, and most recently in September 2016. We walked around the ancient/historic part of Parthenay, and we really enjoyed it. It is very picturesque, and there are numerous info placards next to historic sections which is handy. It's free to look around, so if your nearby I would definitely walk around the old part of the town on a sunny day.

Parthenay old town is well worth a visit
May 2016 • Friends
The medieval bridge and town gate are very well preserved. Follow signs to Vieille Ville and park, then walk downhill to the river. All the streets in this area are untouched and the medieval architecture is wonderful. The Tourist Office is close to the bridge where you can ask about guided tours, or just wander and discover the old buildings and twisty streets for yourselves!

Superbly preserved medieval town
Aug. 2016 • Family
Incredibly well preserved medieval town (quartier ville) with a superb middle age bridge & gate. There are over 100 existing half timber framed some from as early as the 12th century. It was on the Pilgrim trail from northern Europe to Santiago de Compostela. There are also original ramparts & great views from the church. A great immersive experience of a truly historic French town.
