We stumbled upon the gates and ramparts at Parthenay and were really impressed at the completeness of the ramparts and the ancient village it’s a 13 century fortified village and is really beautiful it has beautiful stone bridges and a fantastic cathedral
I reckon this was one of the most underrated towns we visited and definitely worth a visit on its own
The bell tower still works and is centuries old
It’s not fear from Nantes and has a good lot of shops ,cafe and restaurants

It is amazing that so much of the original ramparts still exist. You really, really have to visit these if you are in Parthenay. A lot of the ramparts can be explored and offer beautiful views of the rives as it meanders through Parthenay

Worth a look if you are in the area.

Although Parthenay isn’t spectacular enough to make a special effort to visit, it is certainly worth a look if you are in the vicinity. The old town stands on a rocky spur above a river and the citadel is dominated by the bell tower above the fortified gate, the Sainte-Croix church bell tower, and the impressive former Sheriff court building.

In the Middle Ages this district had several roles. It was a trading area and the centre for judicial, religious and fiscal power.
