You walk along Via Roma which leads from the entrance to the town, under the fortress, to the Porta Nuova, then you can walk along the walls to return to the fortress. The town dates back to 1333, when it was founded with the inhabitants who fled from Vivinaia destroyed by the Florentines. It was built on the hill (hence “Monte”) and named after Charles IV of Bohemia who helped them (hence “Carlo”).

We were looking for the Casino but we didn't understand each other... It was a nice surprise to find Montecarlo a few km from Lucca. We went to the tourist office and a young lady, in addition to advising us on what to do and see, even accompanied us to visit a local gem, the village theatre, which is one of the smallest in the world. This discovery alone was worth the trip. Then pay attention to the cellars in the surrounding area, where you can find excellent wines.

After our alfresco lunch we went to Montecarlo village. Nice example of village high in the hills of Tuscany. As it happened there was a wedding on in the local church and the ladies in our company particularly enjoyed this. Some lovely views of the Tuscan countryside.

Montecarlo was a beautiful town to pop in. The views are incredible and the streets are so sweet. It is a small town worth a look if you are anywhere near. Several excellent restaurants and Fattoria Del Teso are all worth a stop!

My friends and I loved staying a week in Montecarlo with its cobblestone streets, artisanal crafts, shoe and fashion stores, and gelateria. The views! Overlooking olive groves in season, we could see for many miles of the surrounding towns. Looking for a relaxing break in an Italian walled town dating to medieval times- this is a hidden treasure.

We were staying in Lucca for the weekend & intended to drive to Barga for lunch... As we left our hotel, the helpful chap behind the desk mentioned Montecarlo & suggested to take a look.
It's certainly an atmospheric little place, perched high up, with gorgeous views over the surrounding countryside.
As it was December, the car park below the hamlet was almost empty - I noticed a few reviews here with gripes about parking & I can imagine in the summer it will get very crowded.
The historical centre is surrounded by impressive city walls & there's an imposing fortress, the Rocca del Cerruglio, built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries.
We did see a number of bars & eateries open so will try to venture here again. In particular, a restaurant chalk board with dishes of wild boar!

We arrived there by indication of our hotel manager in Lucca. This is the most Charming little place in Tuscany.
We were soooo lucky to meet Mr Roperto, from the village tourist information center. He explained all about town, took us to the theater (a small pearl), explained a lot about the place and it's culture. Then Mr. Roperto took us to the beautiful church - DONT MISS ITS INSIDE. Finally we were offered free local wine.
A place never to forget

Very attractive hill village in the important wine area of Montecarlo and as you might expect there are plenty restaurants where you can eat well and enjoy sampling the excellent local wines. If in doubt start with a jug of the house wine and you will be surprised by the quality and pleased with the price. Large free car park just outside the village.

Small village on high ground, where you can get lost for a pleasant walk, admiring the corners of the village and stopping in the cool to rest. Very welcoming with lots of places to have lunch.

Small village, but definitely nice to visit. Apart from the fortress, it is nice to wander the streets and see here and there characteristic corners to photograph.
