For most people touring in Turkey Cappadocia is the furthest easterly point, but this is not what Turkey is all about. The East has a lot to offer to travel enthusiasts. This is the land of two legendary rivers, Euphrates and Tigris, over the centuries they have supplied much needed water for the development of great human civilizations. Once you have made to Cappodocia you should not think twice to join a tour going to the east, or take a flight from Istanbul to Diyarbakir or to Sanliurfa. You will see amazing sites (Mt Nemrut, Gobekli Tepe, Hasankeyf and Mardin to name a few), and what is more rich culture. This will be one of your most memorable trips.

This is the worlds fifth largest dam and the story of it's effect and subsequent improvement in life for those who benefit from the redirected waterflow and stability of the area is interesting. A nice no hassle stop.

What an amazing sight! This is enormous and the scale is personified by the logo letters on the wall being 53 metres across. I was lucky enough to be briefed by the director and staff, but am not sure how open this is to the general public.

This was the first stop of our tour of Harran/Urfa. The dam was impressive in size. Today, it only operates at 55% of capacity. You can sit and enjoy some beverages while watching the dam. There was also a statue nearby with the names of people who lost their lives building the dam. Try to stop and see the Euphrates on the way. The water was so clear that, when we dropped a stone in, we could see it drop all the way down to the surface.

It is a magnificent place with such a beautiful view, but there is no business, the observation terrace could be better in terms of maintenance and service. But still, it is a place that must be seen. It is recommended.
