A Trip Back In Time

Come and meet our friendly staff and take a relaxing ride on our heritage steam train through the beautiful Mendip Countryside. The return journey takes approximately 40 minutes and is a 5 mile round trip.

You pay once and you can ride the trains all day!

As well as riding the train you can visit our engine shed and workshop and see our restoration projects up close, while away an hour or so chatting away to our very knowledgeable volunteers. We also have a signal box and miniature railway (these are only open on specific dates), small museum, a big shop and cafe serving delicious homemade meals each day we are in steam.

We also offer Cream Teas, High Teas and Sunday Lunches on specific dates which need to be booked in advance as they do sell out very quickly.

Our season runs from March to October and then we run our Santa Specials in December.

Weekend visit

It was a great day out exploring as it was steam gala weekend. We rode the steam train and my son also drove the Diesel engine. Cafe was great. Staff very helpful and friendly.

What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! Very English and very civilised. There was the perfect amount of food for the journey, and the Prosecco helped it go down. It was also a gorgeous sunny day. the Engine shed was interesting and I loved the enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers. My only tiny moan would be that the... More

Visited on Bank Holiday , fairly busy , and overall I guess an ok experience. I feel it is somewhat overpriced for the very short and slow trip down the line. On reviewing on facebook received the reply that you can travel as many times as you like for the ticket price, but why would you !!! But maybe real... More

Visited on May day bank holiday. The staff were friendly and helpfull. The food in the restaurant was tasty with good size portions. The shop had a variety of stuff suitable for everyone. The steam train trip takes just over 30 minutes for the return journey with the opportunity to get off and watch the locomotive rub round at Mendip Vale.station. On the return journey it's possible to alight at Cranmore West station and have a quick look in the carriage and engine shed - which is more interesting to an enthusiast than... More

It is so refreshing to see the engines, buffet cars and carriages which have been lovingly restored by volunteers. On the trip we saw not manly restored railway halts but also many wildflowers growing by the side of the tracks. The platform, sheds and booking hall gave lots of information to the visitors. Thank you

We had a good 4 hour visit to the railway. Although the train ride is short it was still very atmospheric. The carriages are restored to a high standard and it was great to get up close to the engine. In fact there is a train workshop which you can walk through, which was interesting. The cafe serves a simple... More

We came here with our sons (4 and 6) and had a wonderful day out. Considering that the actual train journey is short, it still felt like a great day and we weren't short of things to do. The slogan on the ESR brochure is "The Friendly Steam Railway" and I can honestly say that they lived up to this... More

This is a heritage line run by volunteers. you can see my full review on my youtube channel, out during May. I use a mobility scooter so was keen to see they made an effort to update their website with lots of information. In reality, I found a few issues, all revolving around ramps and inclines. The day itself was... More
