Description:

Barry Brickell (acclaimed potter, painter, engineer and conservationist)...

Barry Brickell (acclaimed potter, painter, engineer and conservationist) started building the railway 35 years ago to bring clay from the hillside to his pottery. This amazing switch-back railway climbs the mountain to the 'Eyeful Tower' with magnificent views over the Hauraki Gulf. The one hour return journey incorporates superb engineering with 2 spirals, 3 short tunnels, 5 reversing points and several large bridges.

Unique pottery sculptures and tile walls line the track through a regenerating forest setting.

Back at the station watch the DVD about Barry and the railway.

Enjoy a walk in the sculpture garden followed by a bush walk in the predator free native sanctuary.

Pottery, souvenirs, mini-bricks, books and the DVD are available to purchase in our craft shop.

Tours Times: 10.15am, 11.30am, 12.45pm, 2pm and 3.15pm DAILY. During the busy seasons we may run additional tours at 9am, 4.30pm and 5.45pm (subject to demand)

As this attraction is extremely popular we strongly suggest you book your seat; especially over the summer period.

A must for families with children!

Very nice railway through wonderful vegetation. I wish I could have done that with my sons about ten years ago :)

One of the best train experiences we have had. Everything was well organised. The commentary was good.

Absolutely fantastic. We arrived Boxing Day 2016 but not having booked was worried that we would get on being NZ's peak holiday season. However we got on the first available train as a reserve and gained seats immediately behind the driver who was Paul from the UK. (Depending on direction of travel which changed many times!) A wonderful example of... More

The Driving Creek railway is another must do visit if you have a couple of hours to spare whilst touring round the Coromandel area. Located a couple of k's outside town this is a wonderful small guage railway with it's own local home made diesel powered engines & carriages which winds it's way from the sculpture studio at it's base... A fun labor of love by an impassioned achiever, this narrow gauge mini railroad is a delight for young and old. Experience a 100+ meter climb up a lush hillside with switchbacks, tunnels, and viaducts arriving at the "Eyefull Tower" observation tower. Worthy of your attention and a visit.

Didn't live up to the hype. An interesting ride up to the tower but I found it difficult to hear the commentary. So many wonderful views all the way round NZ, not sure it was worth the train ride to see this one!

It was a fun ride up the hill. Lots of interesting quirky tidbits of information offered on the ride up and down the hill. On a cool day dress warmly as you are in the trees a lot.

Super little set up. A true visionary to get this train up the hill. Well worth the visit especially for the view from the top.

We took our two year old to the Railway to have his first ride on a train, because like almost every two year old boy he is madly insane by everything that has an engine. He loved the ride in the uncle of Thomas the train and the awesome views you have from the train. The pottery on your way... More

It had been a rainy night and the morning was cool so we decided to choose the railway on the recommendation of the hotel owner. It is a narrow gauge train constructed at the site, in fact everything is constructed at the site! The guy who started this did many things, including building the whole railway. The story is fascinating... More
